Superhero's Don't Get Sick
I’ve been really sick this week and thought I’d take my illness out on Luke, sorry Luke I love you, I swear I do!
This will be a short story in which Luke comes down with a cold causing his sizeshifting abilities to go haywire! Matt calls in reinforcements and we meet a grown-up Ivy! Enjoy!
Approx 3k words
“Yes I’m sure, I’ve never seen him like this before, what do I do?”
“ACHOOOOOO!!!”
Matt’s phone call was rudely interrupted by another strong gust of wet air that resulted in the dining room table being thrown across the room, luckily Matt was swift and had ducked out of the way. He stood once again with eyebrows raised in amazement, that eruption had caused his sick friend to shoot up a few more feet, his head bumping into their ceiling and showering them both in plaster and dust.
Luke’s nose twitched again agitated by the dust he had caused, Matt snapped out of his stupor quickly though and sprinted toward his friend.
“NOPE! Pinch your nose and lay down! Miss Waren would kill us if your gigantic head popped through her floor!”
There was a giggle through the phone as Ivy listened through the speaker at the absurdity of the scenario she was listening in on.
Meanwhile Matt had scaled his mini-giant of a friend and was pushing his head down, instructing him roughly to lay on the floor lest he cause more damage.
“ACHOOOOO!!!”
Another eruption and this time Matt was in the blast zone. “Fuck man!” Matt grimaced and wiped his wet hands on Luke’s shirt. “Ivy get your ass over here now!” Matt shouted into the phone before hanging up and throwing it across the room lest it get even more wet than it already was.
Luke’s chest shuddered under him, and Matt held onto the seems of Luke’s shirt for dear life. “Don’t you dare sneeze again.” He groaned.
“Actually, I think I’m good now, thanks.” Luke’s croaky voice reverberated; Matt rolled his eyes. “Thank the lord, now stay put, I need a fucking towel or something.”
Luke did as he was told, holding still while his friend manoeuvred around him in search of something to clean himself up with. He felt positively awful, his throat was scratchy, and it hurt each time he swallowed, not only that but the sneezing fits were getting worse as he’d just witnessed. Thankfully he hadn’t outgrown the apartment, but he was close to it, closing his eyes he took some careful breathes in through his mouth and tried to concentrate on shrinking.
His whole body shuddered and itched all over and soon he was overtaken by intense light-headedness, the world began to spin as it grew around him.
His head pulsed and a short while later there was a loud banging on the door, each thump sending shockwaves of pain through his skull and he clutched his head wishing the loud sounds would disappear. He had no such luck though as thundering footsteps resounded nearby and the creak of the immense door opened.
“THANK GOD YOU’RE HERE” Matt’s annoyingly booming voice assaulted Luke and he curled in on himself as he lay there amidst the rubble he had created.
“Shut Up!” Luke shouted as loud as his weak body would allow.
Matt meanwhile, heard no such command, he’d made note that his friend was no longer a giant as he’d passed through the living room to the front door, for that he was grateful. They’d need to get him out of here while they could until he was in a healthier state and better able to control his ability.
“Nice to see you too Matt, you’ve got a little something-“ Ivy’s slender fingers twinkled around a particularly soggy clump of hair. He batted her hand away “You try taking a giant size sneeze to the face and see how you look afterwards.” He growled in response.
She giggled and stepped past him and into the apartment, flicking her long wavy brown hair over her shoulder as she went.
“You’re lucky I was working in town actually.” She said stepping into the living room, eyes immediately scanning the area for any sign of her ill brother.
She paused, soft brown eyes landing on a small figure curled tightly into himself on the floor and miniscule hands over his ears. Her face fell and she kneeled gently beside him, hands reaching to scoop him up, a natural reflex to hold her brother protectively when he was so small.
“You have to help me, I don’t know what to-“ Matt started but Ivy quickly shushed him, holding up her small brother in her hands. “Quiet.” She whispered.
Her attention focused back on Luke as she looked him over, he was paler than normal and shaking like a leaf, though she knew he wasn’t fearful of her, she surmised he must have a fever. She placed a finger gently to his forehead and brushed the brown curls away from his sweaty forehead, he was definitely hotter than he should have been.
She held him gently to her chest encasing him in her fingers before she spoke to Matt again.
“Okay, pack whatever medicines you have, all the blankets in the house, water and food if you have it, otherwise I’ll stop by the grocer on the way.” She instructed quietly.
“Where are we going?” Matt asked as he started filling garbage bags of any throw blankets and doona’s he could find.
“Whatever large forest is nearby, he will keep fluctuating like this until he’s better, so we need to get him somewhere safe and away from prying eyes.”
“Achooo”
Ivy looked down her eyebrows furrowing in concern, and she shushed Luke gently like one might do for an unwell child.
“Your okay Luke, we’ll get you back to normal soon, I promise.” Within five minutes both Ivy’s and Matt’s cars were packed with anything they deemed might be useful and Luke had grown to a semi average height, but his body was wobbly on his feet, and he felt weak.
They headed to South Mountain Reservation, only a forty-minute drive away that was hopefully not going to be too crowded in the middle of the week, Luke slept in Ivy’s back seat while they drove, in that time he’d only had one other fluctuation but by her estimates had only grown to about 12 feet and he’d scrunched himself further into a ball. She took a deep breath pushing down on the accelerator, almost there.
Once they arrived and parked their cars, Ivy’s main goal was to get Luke into the woods off the beaten track.
“Can you walk?” She asked up to her big brother who currently stood more than twice her height, he gave a slow nod and stepped forward, lucky no one else seemed to be around, they just needed to keep walking.
A short way in Ivy deemed they had walked as far as they would go today, she prayed no rangers would wonder by and follow her brother’s tracks. She turned to see Matt trailing behind them with a few of the garbage bags and then the ground shook with a resounding thud like a tree had fallen.
Ivy turned to see what had happened only to be knocked square in the chest and sent flying a few short feet away, the air knocked out of her and shaking the dizziness from her eyes she saw Luke had now fully grown and lay limp on the forest floor his immense hand resting innocently beside her.
“Fuck, Ivy are you okay?” Matt came rushing over, he’d just barely dodged a car sized shoe as it barrelled toward him, but Ivy hadn’t been so lucky.
Ivy shakily pushed herself to a stand, brushing the leaves out of her hair and pressing her fingers to her ribs searching for any extensive injuries, it had hurt like hell, but nothing was broken, she’d get a few bruises but she’d live.
“I’m fine, not my first rodeo with a delirious giant.” She smiled and waved him off.
“I’ve never seen him sick before, I was beginning to think he couldn’t get sick, well until now.” Matt said staring in astonishment at his large friend, currently unconscious with his face in the dirt.
“This will be the third time that I know of, he doesn’t get sick often but when he does…well you can see.” Her expression softened again, he was going to feel like shit when he woke up, she’d be careful not to mention the close call she and Matt had just experienced.
Working as a team Matt and Ivy managed to get all their supplies to their secluded little area and took turns in patting Luke’s warm temple with cold wet blankets they’d dunked in the river. A short while later Luke began to stir, his vision blurry and his head throbbing, he wracked a wet cough that disturbed the nearby wildlife, but Ivy and Matt kept a safe distance this time.
“Luke?” Ivy called gently, stepping closer to her brothers face in concern.
Luke’s eyes blinked slowly clearing his vision until it settled upon his little sister, she looked so small, there was no fear in her eyes, only concern for him and his heart beat quickened reminding him how lucky he was to have her in his life. Then he noted a purplish bruise along her collar bone and his eyes widened in worry, ready to push himself back and away from her.
Ivy quickly pulled her cardigan around her shoulders tighter to cover the bruise and held a hand up to him stepping closer confidently.
“It’s okay Luke, I’m not hurt, only a few bruises, I’m okay.” She reassured him gently, he brought a hand up to his mouth and coughed as gently as he could to clear his throat.
“D-did I do t-that?” He croakily asked, a finger stretching out toward her and brushing the cardigan off her shoulder.
“I swear I’m fine Luke.” She insisted but Luke wasn’t so easily convinced, a tear fell down his cheek and splashed onto the damp forest floor.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered.
Ivy only sighed, her heart breaking for him, she stepped closer still and pressed her body against his damp cheek, spreading her arms out across his face in a hug. A gesture she’d done so many times throughout her life and came naturally living with a brother who tended to change sizes rather frequently.
He brought his larger hand up behind her and carefully held her to his face, reciprocating the hug all the while repeating ‘sorry’ over and over. The moment between the two siblings was broken however as another body joined the group hug, Matt had flung himself beside Ivy, wriggling himself between the massive fingers and being mindful of the Giant’s nose, his arms spread around Ivy and over his friends cheek.
Luke’s hand pulled away and Ivy and Luke both gave Matt an odd look to which Matt was immediately offended, throwing his arms up in the air and stepping away with a hurt look on his face.
“What! I need hugs too you know!” Matt said in exasperation.
“Aww were you feeling left out?” Ivy teased, hand on her hip as she leant against her brother’s face.
With a mischievous smirk on his lips, Luke quickly scooped Matt up in one hand and brought him to his chest, turning to lay on his back he pressed Matt against his shirt in a tight but not too tight squeeze.
“You should have just said so.” Luke laughed, while Matt squirmed in his grasp.
“Alright, alright! Hug time’s over now!” Matt banged his fists on the warm surface underneath him until the Giant relented and removed his hand.
Amidst the laughter that kept Matt from gaining footing on his friend’s chest, he noticed a change in the rhythm of the quakes, almost like he was going to…
“Ahhhh, ahhhh.” Luke pinched his nose and Matt practically dived off of his chest, rolling onto the ground.
“Choooooo!” Luke leaned to the side sneezing in the opposite direction of Matt and Ivy and successfully stripping a nearby tree completely of its leaves.
Ivy walked around him carefully and held up a large blue bedsheet as though it were a hanky, he took it gratefully and proceeded to loudly blow his nose while the smaller people around him covered their ears.
“I’m sorry guys, this all sucks.” Luke groaned, he pushed himself up and sat crossed legged looking down miserably at the two people who cared about him the most.
“Hey at least you didn’t sneeze on me this time.” Matt smiled, trying to cheer his friend up.
Luke cringed, he had been so out of it at the apartment and had almost forgotten that embarrassing experience, at least Matt seemed okay.
“Sorry.” Luke muttered yet again.
Matt rolled his eyes. “Quit saying your sorry, none of this is your fault, your just sick.”
“I don’t get sick.” Luke said firmly to which Ivy just raised her eyebrows.
“Oh, so the cough of 2010 was just you teaching the horse how to fly was it?” Ivy quipped.
“Okay fine, I don’t get sick often, not like you guys do.” Luke mumbled, and it was true, he would bet any money that his strong immune system was all because of his unique ability, however that didn’t mean he never got sick. And when he did, it was bad.
“Even superhero’s get sick dude, remember that episode of Smallville! This is just like that!” Matt said excitedly comparing the two vastly different scenarios.
“Once again, I’m not a superhero and I’m certainly not Clark Kent.” Luke pinched the bridge on his nose and sighed, his stomach gave a groan and he realised he hadn’t eaten all day. “Did you bring any food? I’m starving.”
Ivy nodded. “We did…do you think your able to shift? I’d like to give you some medicine as well but I’d prefer to give it to you when you’re a bit smaller and not likely to overdose if I give you too much.”
Luke concentrated, unlike last time where he was borderline conscious, he was able to focus his body to shrink to his average human height without getting dizzy.
“Alright let’s get some food and meds into you now then before you fluctuate again.” Ivy said grasping his arm and leading him over to the small fire they had made, she wrapped him up in a warm blanket, handing him a bowl of vegetable soup and a handful of pills.
Once he’d finished his bowl to satisfaction, Ivy took it from him and laid a hand over his forehead, sighing with relief. “Your fevers broken, thank god.” She said.
Now that the worst seemed to be over, the three of them sat in contented silence, watching the fire and chewing on jerky.
“So… I’ve been thinking about names…” Matt said into the open air, Ivy turned to peer at him curiously. “Names?”
“No.” Was all Luke said, knowing full well his best friend was about to try and give him a superhero name….again!
“Just hear me out!” Matt insisted.
“What names? What the hell are you two talking about?” Ivy snapped, currently agitated that she was somehow not included in this inside joke of theirs.
“Luke’s superhero name.” Matt said wiggling his eyebrows to which Luke just held his face in his hands in embarrassment.
“Ooooooh I like this game!” Ivy said giddy in her seat and rubbing her hands together. “How about Ant Man!”
Matt looked at her like she was crazy. “Ivy, that name is already taken, you have to be original, I was thinking ‘Shifter’.”
“Giganta!?”
“Expando!”
“Proportio!”
“Oh my god! Stop! Both of you!” Luke groaned. “It just sounds like your saying spells from Harry Potter now.”
Ivy and Matt laughed together at Luke’s expense, he was too sick and too tired to argue with them further on the subject. They continued to list stupid names and when Luke had had enough, he announced that he was going to bed. He stood and carefully pulled his sleeping bag a good distance from the fire, just in case he grew in the night when the pills wore off.
As much as they were bugging him, he wouldn’t risk turning them both into pancakes in his sleep.
Ivy and Matt sat up talking and catching up for a little while longer and Luke was just about to drift off to sleep when soft footsteps crunched through the leaves on the ground as they approached him. Without a word, Ivy took off her shoes lifting the corner of the sleeping bag and wriggled in beside him just as they had done as kids.
Luke always had a twin sized sleeping bag, he was always afraid of growing in the night, and figured better to have a larger one he can get out of quickly if he did start to grow. Ivy was also not very big, her slim frame left heaps of room between them so they were both comfortable.
“What are you doing?” Luke asked her, as she turned in the sleeping bag to face him, she buried her face in his chest and he wrapped her arms around her. He hadn’t known till now just how much he missed his little sister and how grateful he was that she was here right now.
“I was worried something might happen in the night.” She said matter-of-factly.
“Yeah, I could grow and hurt you…again.” He said quietly.
“Or you could shrink and become an owls next meal, I’m a light sleeper, I’ll wake either way if anything happens.” She insisted.
He gave her a kiss on the forehead, brushing away her curls, the same shade of brown as his own and breathed a contented sigh.
“Thank you, Ivy.” He whispered.
“Any time bro, also just for the record, I always believed you’d be a superhero.”
“Not you too.” Luke sighed impatiently. “Just, go to sleep.”
There was silence once more and Luke really did think that Ivy had gone off to sleep, so he let his own breathes even out before unconsciousness took a hold of him. However, Ivy was not yet asleep and instead holding back laughter as she said the final words of the night.
“Goodnight… Expando.”

hello g/t community, it’s Tora. again 👹
damn, you guys were so active on my post about filthy hands, i had an impression that not a lot of us actually think about not so pleasant stuff when it comes to our favourite g/t.
another example - smell. imagine if you don’t like how the giant that picked u up smells… or the tiny who didn’t have access to shower for a week 🥲
i wish more creators mentioned actions of personal hygiene in their works for both sides…
because personally, i find it really cute when you fall asleep and wake up near the giant BUT OMG i can’t get out of my head the thought about morning breath. so i’m begging y’all, before morning cuddles, make at least giants go brush their teeth т.т
post about hands

My Borrowed Son | 22 | Choices and Change
Chapter Twenty-Two | Choices and Change
Amanda knew she had messed up, but was now even the time to discuss it? Every expert she read about was saying the same thing. Every article and book indicated the same thing.
And yet Amanda couldn’t bring herself to do it.
Every adoption parenting book and article she researched said that integrating the fact that the child was adopted as soon and as early as possible would be the healthiest thing for them. Practically every study said that integrating this information as a part of every day life would keep a sense of normalcy and a sense of belonging for the child.
It helped in showing the child that even if they didn’t come from you, it didn’t mean they were loved or cared for any less. Sharing this information allowed open communication and questions in a “safe space.”
The only problem for Amanda was that she didn’t have the answers.
She didn’t tell Parker early on that she didn’t give birth to him.
She didn’t tell Parker that she found him at a children’s playground under a bench scared and alone after several powerful thunderstorms days prior.
She didn’t know what he was if he wasn’t a human with some kind of weird genetic disorder.
She didn’t even know if his real, biological parents were even alive.
No answers.
No hope of turning back the clock.
No way she could proceed delicately if she wanted to tell Parker anything about his origins.
So, when his fourteenth birthday came and went, Amanda realized that she could only prepare herself for when his questions would inevitably come. Everything was further complicated when Parker finally confessed that he thought he had feelings for his fellow classmate, Lyn.
Amanda had suspected Parker’s feelings for months now, but it wasn’t until he actually confessed that he thought he had a crush that it seemed real to her. It was obvious to Amanda, but Parker was a bit more reserved when it came to his confessions of puppy love for his friend.
No talk about being boyfriend and girlfriend was mentioned, but Amanda knew it was only a matter of time before any of this happened. It was an exciting and nerve wracking time, but Amanda couldn’t help but feel dread for what might lay on the horizon.
The thoughts about a discussion with Parker about him being adopted were also taking a back burner in her mind.
Recently, Amanda’s work had given her a promotion and wanted her to start coming into the office regularly rather than being virtual. She trusted her son in being alone in the apartment because she had done it before dozens of times when she needed to go out and couldn’t bring or hide Parker.
More than that was the fact Amanda wanted to move into a real home. A beautiful house in a nearby neighborhood had just become available and, after a lot of consideration, Amanda decided to talk to Parker about possibly moving from an apartment to a house.
“Nothing will change. You’ll still have your normal classes, but we wouldn’t be in a condo attached to other apartments anymore. We would have more space and could really made something special out of it,” explained Amanda.
Of course, Parker didn’t have to be sold hard on the idea. He had lived in the same place all his life and wanted his mom to be happy. She had talked about buying a house for years and Parker had always wanted to experience a move. All of his other friends seemed to experience it after all.
The promise of a new adventure was thrilling, so Parker agreed.
“Yeah! Is it a big place? Are there lots of rooms? Is it far away? Or is it close?” asked Parker.
“It’s a bit close actually. It’s just a few neighborhoods over, which might seem silly to move if it’s not a whole new area. It’s a fairly big place. There’s a big basement, a big living room, and three bedrooms,” explained Amanda.
“Woah! I can’t wait to tell Lyn,” beamed Parker as he continued to help clear his dishes after dinner. At this, he paused and glanced nervously up at his mom. “Do… you think… umm… well… do you think I could invite my friends over? Once we get all moved in and everything? Like… in time for my fifteenth birthday?”
Amanda’s stomach dropped as she considered Parker’s words.
Many of his friends had been around for four or five years. His really close friends seemed to be good kids and developing into decent teens.
The real question, however, was could they be trusted in handling Parker with care? Also, how would they react to seeing their friend in person? What would their reactions be to him being so small?
“I… Maybe. We’ll get settled first and then see if we can host something with some of your friends,” said Amanda.
Parker’s demeanor shifted from nervous to excited as he gave an excited shimmy and washed his dishes and then headed back to his room to finish a paper for his class.
Amanda knew she had an opportunity right then and there to possibly talk to Parker about why she had been so cautious, but diminishing that excitement in Parker’s eyes would break her heart.
She decided that this new move with new beginnings may be the best time to talk to her son about how he came into her life. Just as soon as they were settled, Amanda decided that she needed to talk to Parker about everything. Not knowing the answers wasn’t a good excuse anymore. Not wanting to hurt Parker wasn’t an option.
This was going to hurt both of them, but Amanda knew deep down that, as sick as it made her, she needed to address the truth regardless of consequences.
It would happen with the move and as soon as they were settled.
~~~^*^*^~~~
Kers heard the word “move” and knew he had a critical decision to make – stay in the apartment complex with the other humans he could borrow from or go with Amanda and Parker to watch over the Borrower child.
It wasn’t a difficult decision, but the logistics was the thing Kers was mainly concerned about. Moving as a Borrower was a tricky thing. There were too many things that could go wrong and twice as many things to worry about.
Kers could be seen, both by Amanda and by Parker.
Kers could be crushed by boxes or furniture pieces.
Kers could experience malnutrition and have a harder time finding food because humans became very particular about their food when moving.
Kers would have to start from scratch when moving to a new place if Borrowers didn’t occupy the home before he moved in.
The prospect of starting from scratch wasn’t an appealing one, but there was little else he could do. He made a silent promise to keep Parker safe, and that was what he intended to do.
So, with precision and care, Kers began packing all of his essentials in a go backpack. For his other essentials and items he had borrowed and wanted to take with him, Kers made the bold decision to put the items back into the human’s possession in the hopes he could borrow them back once they had finished the move.
Some of the things were blankets and kitchen supplies that were too heavy for him to carry with him. Other items he was able to deconstruct and slip into small boxes of miscellaneous nick knacks that the human, Amanda, never really bothered with.
It helped that Amanda had a big calendar countdown in the kitchen letting herself and Parker know how many days they had until the big move. It let Kers slip down into the kitchen and place his valuables into places Amanda might not look or grow suspicious of while she collected everything to move.
When the big day came, Kers felt his heart pounding in his throat. He had managed to collect nearly everything in his home and place it back into Amanda’s care temporarily. When Amanda began moving her boxes, the Borrower seized his opportunity.
Palms sweaty. Heart pounding distinctively slow in sync with every time his foot connected with the ground. Kers knew he had mere seconds to spare, but it didn’t stop his calmness of hand as he wrenched his hook from his hip and snagged it on the edge of the box.
Kers’ sprint was not half as taxing as the lightning fast climb he made into a nearby cluttered box of odds and ends. He just managed to get his hook free and found a hiding place, trusting his skills and praying he wasn’t noticed, before he felt the box begin to shift. He closed his eyes and hoped that nothing would reveal his hiding place.
The box jostled vigorously before being hoisted into the air at a nauseating speed. From where he was, Kers could see Amanda’s fingers poking through the box at the handholds. Kers held onto his gut and pinched his thumbs into his clenches fists as his breakfast threatened to make an appearance.
“Hang on, mom! Are my chargers in that box? Or in the other one?” asked Parker, whose voice was alarmingly close. Kers dared to glance up at the small gap of light at the top of the box as he wriggled further down into his hiding space beside some pen cups. From where he was, Kers could clearly see the charging cables Parker was referring to.
“Um… I think so,” Amanda replied, her much louder voice shaking the Borrower to his core.
“Is it okay if I check? I’ll be quick,” asked Parker. The question made Kers’ blood run cold.
Check?
Check!
You mean in the box?
Here?
Now?
Oh no…
Kers could do nothing as he listened to the sound of tiny feet pitter pad across the cardboard roof above him and watch as a small shadow filled the gap above him. He could only hope his Borrower skills had camouflaged him well enough so that Parker and his keen eyes wouldn’t notice him.
The small shadow of a fellow Borrower eclipsed the little bit of light at the top of the box before Kers heard a soft thump followed by an “ooff.” The disguised Borrower leaned back further and made sure he was braced for if the box was dropped suddenly. He knew the cardboard was too thick to cut through, but Kers had a clear path to those handholds Amanda was using now.
If he needed to, he could make a mad dash as long as that path wasn’t blocked.
No reassuring thoughts could quiet his relentlessly thumping heart. Each beat made his entire chest throb. Clenching his jaw and leaning back a little further, Kers could clearly see the little sandy haired Borrower teen rummaging through a few odds and ends at the opposite end of the box.
Seeing him up close really showed Parker’s form. He looked healthy and tall, which was a tribute to Amanda’s care. Amazing what good nutrition can do for you. He’s taller than the average Borrower, and he’s only going to get taller.
Parker suddenly turned around and, for a moment, Kers felt his heart skip a beat. Parker’s eyes widened and then squinted in rapid succession.
Kers held his breath.
Everything – time itself – stood still before Kers saw a smile curl Parker’s lips.
“Found them! They’re over there in the corner,” called Parker as he spun back around toward the light and jumped, catching the edge of the cardboard with his fingertips and hoisting himself up and out of the box.
Kers wanted to shout to release all of the pent-up energy his body was charged with in those tense moments, but instead he forced himself to breathe calmly and nodded slowly.
That was close.
That was too close.
One of us needs to talk to Parker sooner or later.
Kers could only imagine what kind of interaction that would have been had Parker actually spotted him hiding there under the various wires and contraptions in the box. It only ended poorly for everyone no matter how Kers thought about it.
It only reaffirmed the fact that Parker needed to know the truth whether or not he was asking the right questions.
It was time.
At least, it was nearing time.
Kers realized that he needed to get to the new house and settled in, relatively speaking, before addressing Parker. It occurred to Kers that possibly addressing Amanda first might be a better alternative to talking to Parker first, but the thought of talking to a human and willingly revealing Borrower-kind made him sick.
Sadly, it was probably the best way to go about it. Revealing himself directly to Parker would bring about trust issues between him and his mother and possibly make Parker resent his mother. If Kers talked to Amanda and answered her questions first, perhaps when she talked to Parker she would have those answers and then be able to refer to Kers, their friendly neighborhood wall walker, for further explanation.
It would show that Amanda wanted to talk to Parker about everything and wasn’t trying to hide information while also telling him the truth.
Parker deserved it.
He was a good kid.
He was going to be a man before long.
It wasn’t going to be easy or pretty, but just mulling over the concepts and ideas of addressing everything to Parker and Amanda helped keep the Borrower’s mind off of the overall trip. He didn’t even notice the roar of the car engine or the jostling all around him as the boxes around him.
The car finally came to a halt and after what felt like an hour of waiting in the darkness of the vehicle trunk the jostling came to his box as it was carried into the house. The whole thing felt like tumbling down a bumpy hill or a knotted line, every step making his insides lurch. Kers could only guess that Amanda was more careful when she was carrying around Parker; he hoped so at least.
When the world finally stopped moving, Kers remained completely still for another twenty minutes. His heart pounded uncomfortably as the thought that Parker could come climbing down into the box for his various belongings interrupted any and all of Kers’ strategic plans to escape his current environment.
It wasn’t until he was certain he was going to be alone for the next few minutes that Kers dared to push himself up, grab his pack, and climb up to the handhold to get a better view of his surroundings.
The living area was hard wood, which would make any movement very audible if he wasn’t light on his toes, and from where Kers was he could spot the kitchen and a set of stairs leading to an upstairs.
The vastness of the room and complete lack of cover made his instincts feel electrified, but all he needed was one clear shot to get into the walls. The sensation and difficulty of the task made his head swirl, but Kers took a few deep breaths to calm himself.
Go. Now!
That instinct in his mind screamed just as he began wiggling his way through the handhold on the box. Every hair stood on end. Every sound seemed amplified. The tremor in the ground felt like an earthquake.
Amanda was on her way back.
Kers knew he had only seconds to react, and he took full advantage of it.
Slinging his pack onto his back, Kers dared to drop from one box to the next without a security line all the way to the ground where he fell instantly into a crouch. His body seemed to move on its own as he rounded the corner just as Amanda passed right behind and headed toward the kitchen with a box of supplies in her arms.
One glance told Kers that Parker was riding on Amanda’s shoulder and seeing them both towering above him was crippling. Heart palpitating, Kers took his chance as he spotted an electrical outlet at the far end of the living room. He was sure he was making noise. It sounded like he was running around crashing into everything he could, which was not the case.
He had just made it to the electrical cover and unscrewed the faceplate when he heard Amanda and Parker talking about how they wanted to set up Parker’s room. It made Kers’ heart hurt hearing the excitement in the young teen’s voice.
There was such zeal and innocence there.
It took a couple of good tugs, but Kers finally managed to yank free the cover as he practically threw himself into the walls and covered the hole once more.
As Kers slipped into the comfort of the walls, he let himself breathe his first true sigh of relief all day. Though he knew borrowing back the things he mixed into Amanda’s belongings would be a trick, he knew he was once again safe within reason.
The Borrower sank to the ground, sliding down the wall slowly, and sat there against the stud of a load bearing wall. Something in his heart refused to quiet. It was either fate or pure dumb luck that Parker hadn’t seen him earlier.
Kers chuckled to himself quietly as the irony hit him. Here he was worried that Parker – a fellow Borrower – saw him as if Parker were a human.
Well… I suppose he kind of is all things considering.
Once he gathered himself, Kers hoisted himself and his pack onto his back. There was a lot to do and there was never enough time to do it.
First things first was to find a nice place to sleep and set up a temporary base of operations. There was nothing worse during a move than trying to fun from one side of the house to the othe when there was a decent middle ground that reached all of the essential spots.
For Kers, that usually was at or around the kitchen, so that’s where he headed. The pack on his back felt like it weighed a whole pound, but he refused to leave these things behind. It honestly showed him what living a sedentary life felt like, especially when collecting things with sentimental value.
It was a new experience, and something about it felt oddly good. Borrowers, after all, didn’t usually get to keep many trinkets and bobbles and knick-knacks that amused them. They needed to be able to move at the drop of a hat. They lived everywhere and nowhere.
Nomads.
Sojourners.
Borrowers.
What was on their backs was already too much to carry. It didn’t stop Kers from collecting what he did and bringing it with him.
Despite the aching it caused his bones and muscles, Kers trekked through the walls with steady confidence. He had moved many times before, carrying those same things with him everywhere ever since he was a child.
Now was no different.
He would start from scratch and work his way back up to having a home, but he wouldn’t part with these things. It would be difficult. He knew it. But it wasn’t different than anything else he had ever done.
He also knew, as he turned his hip lamp and held it to the ground, that there wasn’t hardly enough dust in between the walls and beams. There were holes from thumb tacks in weird places. It was his next discovery that truly solidified Kers’ suspicions. There was even a small pencil drawing that looked like a simple house with an arrow heading further into the walls.
Excitement and nervousness instantly churned his insides.
I haven’t even been here twenty minutes and already I think there might be someone else living here in the walls.
Kers’ suspicions were confirmed when he wiggled his way through a narrow board that looked like it had been purposefully cut and smoothed over and saw Christmas and fairy lights twinkling around the next corner.
The Borrower swallowed dryly as every possible scenario clouded his mind. This was both the best thing and the worst thing possible.
Best because he didn’t need to start from scratch and had others he could potentially rely on if they were friendly.
Worst because they could see Kers as an enemy. What was worse still was that they didn’t know about Amanda, Parker, and the circumstances surrounding this human mother and Borrower child duo.
Kers had decided over four years ago to help and protect Parker. If that had to be from other Borrowers before Parker was ready for the truth, so be it.
No sooner had Kers made this decision did he hear voices coming from around the corner. They sounded like a mix of ages and genders, but Kers guessed it was a dad and at least three kids, two boys and a girl.
Kers didn’t want to scare them and did the only polite thing to do.
“Hello?” he called, no plan and every prayer to his name.
would Luke ever have felt comfortable enough to mimic gt scenes from media for goofs like doing a spoof on Gulliver’s Travels, Ant Man, Transformers, Borrowers, etc?
He certainly would not feel comfortable mimicking G/t scenes for just anyone but who could say no to those cute doe brown eyes.
Introducing a short story featuring Mr Luke Gulliver our resident Size Shifter. A short story where Luke is easily pressured into playing Gulliver's travels with his little sister Ivy.
Approx 2k words
Mr Luke Gulliver
It was just another average Saturday morning in the Wright household, Luke was in the stables feeding and brushing down the horses, his parents were currently drawing up plans to renovate his bedroom. It had been a few weeks since his nightmare incident, in that time temporary plastic walls had been put up and all debris and broken furniture had been thrown away.
His parents had the idea of reinforcing Luke’s walls, strengthening them and possibly making his room larger also so that if accidents did happen, then Luke and his family would all be safe. Luke hated that he had unknowingly put his family in danger and still felt the pang of guilt in scaring his family and especially his little sister that night. An experience he wasn’t likely to forget and would do everything in his power to never repeat again.
“Hey Luke!” A high pitched voice shouted as his little sister Ivy skipped into the stables, brown curls bouncing around in an untamed mess. She skidded to a stop beside him and gave him a toothy grin as she looked up at her big brother, his heart didn’t deserve a sister like her who could forgive him and love him despite him scaring her so fiercely.
“Hey Ivy, whatcha doing? I thought you were helping mum and dad with drawing plans and stuff.” He asked putting down the brush and giving Helix a handful of honey oats as a treat.
“Yeah…but I wanna play with you now!” She squealed with excitement.
“I’m not playing dolls if that’s what you’re thinking, the clothes are so stiff and itchy, plus your barbies give me the creeps.” He shuddered remembering the last time Ivy had convinced him to shrink in order to play ‘Barbie Tea Party’ with her.
“No, no, I wanted to play Gulliver, like the movie we watched the other night!” She was practically bouncing on the spot and Luke resisted the urge to hold her still, he gave her a dubious look.
“What part did you have in mind?” He asked carefully.
“The lilly part!”
Luke laughed and shook his head. “You mean Lilliput?”
She nodded enthusiastically, her brown eyes twinkling as she let her wild imagination envision the endless possible scenarios they could play.
Luke debated with himself for a moment, he hadn’t allowed himself to grow since that night, he’d shrunk a few times but the idea of growing again and scaring his family, the possibility of making his nightmare a reality frightened him to no end. He had refused to let himself grow at all since that night.
However, the idea of playing out scenes from one of his favourite movies did appeal to him, his parents had found many movies that featured really big people or really small people, all in an attempt to put Luke at ease and feel a little less like a freak. His favourites so far had been ‘The Borrowers’, ‘The Iron Giant’ and of course ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ where the main character experiences what it’s like to be a giant and also be doll sized.
He looked down at his little sister, her honey brown eyes big and pleading, if there had been any doubt before, it was slashed now, he smiled at her and she screamed with joy, grabbing his hand she pulled him fiercely into the paddock behind the house.
“Okay you get big, I’m gonna get my dress-ups!” Ivy sprinted toward the house, flying right by her parents and immediately digging through her dress up box until she found a few outfits she deemed appropriate for their game.
Meanwhile the nervous ten year old boy stood in the middle of the paddock with his eyes closed willing himself to become big. This was a difficult task when all his instincts were telling him that it would be too dangerous to grow around his little sister.
Eventually Luke was able to clear his mind, taking deep breathes just like his mum had shown him and before he knew it the world was shrinking around him. He sat down just as Ivy rounded the side of the house dragging as many reels of rope as her six year old body could manage.
She threw her haul down on the ground with a huff and then looked around before looking up at Luke as though she’d just noticed him there, all 45 feet of him. “Oh good, your ready then!” She smiled energy renewed.
A short time later and with some help from the giant himself, Ivy had successfully created the ‘Discovery on the beach’ scene with Luke loosely tied down to the ground. She’d changed into a pirate costume trying to mimic the style of clothing worn in the movies and now stood on the ‘sleeping’ giant’s’ chest inspecting him with a magnifying glass.
“Where did this beast come from!” Ivy shouted in her best grown man voice and began poking him with the plastic sword she wielded.
Luke lay there, eyes closed, trying his best not to laugh from the tickly sensation of his little sister walking around on his chest and poking him with a sword. There was silence for a little while before Ivy cleared her throat suggestively causing him to open one eye and see what the problem was.
“This is the part where you wake up and roar.” She whispered out of character, gesturing with her hands for him to continue, Luke swallowed nervously.
“Uh, can we skip that part?” Luke asked nervously, he didn’t much feel like imitating a gigantic monster, the part in the movie where Gulliver writhes trying to free himself, scaring the Lilliputians around him and shouting loudly.
“No!” Ivy insisted, Luke sighed closing his eyes once more and getting back into character.
Luke began to wriggle, causing Ivy to loose her footing, she giggled with excitement. “The beast is waking!” She cried. Luke opened his eyes scanning the area around him in pretend astonishment at the little people who were not there, his eyes then landing on a miniscule Ivy sprawled on his chest with wide eyes before he opened his mouth and roared.
“AHHHHHHHH!”
His shout could be heard for miles, it reverberated through the ground and Ivy covered her ears while smiling widely, she was so happy that her brother was committing fully to the game.
Their parents on the other hand, shot up from their seats within the house, the windows rattled with the shout coming from what could only be their giant-sized son. Karly exchanged concerned looks with her husband before they both ran out the door and rounded the corner of the house and then came to a sudden stop to take in the scene before them.
“The beast is waking!!!” Ivy screamed before clambering down her brother’s side and landing with an ‘oof’ on the ground below, both children then noticed their parents staring wide eyed at them.
“We were just-“Luke began to try to explain but his father cut him off, shaking his head out of his stupor and stormed toward the tied down giant waving an accusing finger at him.
“Who and what are you! And how did you come to find Lilliput! Did the Bigenders send you!!” David quickly picked up a king’s crown from Ivy’s pile of dress-ups and slung it on his head, taking on a kingly stance as he stood before his son’s large ocean blue eyes.
Ivy practically beamed with joy as her father enthusiastically joined in the game and Luke supressed a laugh at his father’s comical expression. Luke had to fight to keep his own face straight before changing to one of surprise and wonder as Gulliver stared down at the little people by his head.
“I’m Luke Gulliver sir, I’m afraid I don’t know how I got here, but might I ask? Who are you?” Gulliver asked.
The king stamped his feet dramatically in disgrace. “Why I’m the King of Lilliput!”
“Your highness what do we do with him?” Ivy asked still pretending to be one of the soldiers who’d found the giant.
“Perhaps he could help us win the war with the Bigenders my king?” Karly said standing beside her husband and taking his arm as his Queen and joining in on the game with her children.
The game continued as the king and queen welcomed Gulliver into their palace to share a feast and drink to celebrate their agreement in taking down the Bigenders once and for all. Ivy changed costumes to take her place as the princess of the palace, as Karly and David pretended to serve Luke gigantic meals and barrels of drink they didn’t notice that their youngest and fearless daughter had found a ladder and climbed the roof of their house.
“Fire Fire! Please someone save me!” Ivy shouted as she clung to the chimney of the roof, all eyes darted to her, and her mother let out a very much not pretend cry of alarm.
“Ivy Michelle Wright! Get down from there right now!” Her mother yelled both in anger and concern for her daughter.
Ivy promptly ignored her though. “How will I escape this fire! Help!” She continued to shout insisting on continuing the game.
Luke astonished by his sister’s bravery looked down at the roof, his hand hovering nearby just in case, this seemed to put his parents at ease at least a little bit. Luke smiled through a grimace and leaned down to whisper to his sister, out of character for a moment. “I’m not gonna pee on the house.” He laughed.
Ivy giggled and shook her head, that part in the movie was so funny but would not be necessary today, all she wanted was to simply be rescued from atop her tall tower.
“I’ll save you!” Luke Gulliver cried and proceeded to throw handfuls of make-believe water onto the house, before his hand approached his little sister grasping her gently in a fist and lowering her down next to their father.
“You saved our dear Princess how will we ever repay you!” The King cried and fiercely hugged the little princess, meanwhile Karly also joined in with the hug whispering into Ivy’s ear. “Please don’t ever do that again.”
Ivy nodded and hugged her mother back, she hadn’t meant to scare anyone, she’d only wanted to make the game more realistic.
Luke’s stomach ruined the moment as it gave a loud growl, and he held it trying to muffle the sound while his cheeks flushed red in embarrassment. The thing about being a giant meant everything was amplified and he could hide nothing. Ivy giggled and his mother raised an eyebrow at him. “Hmm, perhaps we should pause the game for now and have a real feast, huh? I’ll get some sandwiches ready.” She gave her family a soft smile before heading back toward the house with Ivy trailing behind her.
Luke concentrated for a moment, finding it easier to shrink back to normal after spending a few hours being big. When he opened his eyes, he found comfort in looking up at his father who proceeded to hug him tightly.
“You’re a good brother, you know that?” David said gently and pushed the curls away from his son’s face.
“Thanks Dad, and um thanks for playing with us too! It’s nice not to be the only one playing these games with Ivy.” Luke smiled shyly, his cheeks still flushed.
“She’s lucky to have a brother who can act out her games so well, just do me a favour and discourage her from climbing the roof ever again.” He ruffled his son’s hair and they both made their way inside for a well-earned break.
Just another normal Saturday for the Wright family.
I hope you enjoyed this one, I really love writing about Luke and Ivy as kids, they are just so cute! Thank you so much for the prompt, I hope it was as fun to read as it was to write! All suggestions and ideas are welcome!
