To all of the people who believe Azula is crazy/evil, and to all of those who think Eska is abusive or toxic. I just want to let you know from the bottom of my heart…that I actually could not care less.

(This isn’t a call out post and I’m not bashing on anyone I just need to say it)

I get it - Azula was a child and for that she is rightly granted leniency for the most part amongst the fandom. And Eska was definitely controlling but you can’t say she didn’t care

BUT HERES THE THING

I don’t care about the “excuses” or “reasons” like… at all. I am a firm believer in letting women be evil just for the sake of being evil.

Azula committed war crimes? Iconic

Eska told Bolin he shouldn’t touch other women? Literally queen behavior.

LET WOMEN BE EVIL, THEY DONT NEED DEFENDING. THEYRE TOXIC AND MORALLY CORRUPT AND ITS WHY I LOVE THEM

Something Eska’s presence in book 2 of The Legend of Korra put into relief was an attitude within the fandom, and even within canon, regarding some of the villainous girls of the franchise. How “redeemability¹” seems to revolve around their treatment of the boys and men in their lives; supporting the right ones over the wrong ones.

Eska

One of the moments that’s supposed to be a point in her favor is disobeying Unalaq’s orders to ignore Desna’s injury and continue to attack the seal on the northern spirit portal in favor of taking Desna to get life saving medical care.

And then there’s Bolin. Despite anything you can say about Eska and Bolin’s relationship, but another is freeing Mako and Bolin based on Bolin’s appealing to their past relationship.

(For contrast, Desna, was reconsidering based on the fact that his father wanted to leave him to die.)

Mai

With Mai, do I even have to say it? Her most iconic moment is saving her ex from a painful death boiling alive.

And while the show doesn’t ever elaborate on Mai’s relationship and feelings regarding Tom-Tom, the Yang era comics² portray Mai as a Good Older Sister who wants to protect her little brother, taking him away from their father who’s running the New Ozai Society.

Now compare to Azula

Azula doesn’t have a love interest like the other two do. But she does have three male relatives.

From day 1, the biggest thing working against her is that she wasn’t kind to Zuko and Iroh from the jump.

Azula may have brought Zuko home with his honor restored instead of chains like she was ordered. But it’s not as unambiguous an action as saving his life, and it’s framed and was frequently interpreted as being part of a larger scheme. Which is given more weight than every other interaction they have in the first half of book 3. In short, she didn’t unambiguously prioritize her brother.

Also Azula stayed loyal to Ozai to the end

It’s just weird that there’s this motif of “prioritize your brother and exes and walk away from your father.” And that the girl who doesn’t walk away from her father or prioritize her brother gets framed more negatively.
