When creating the new Australian National University in 1946, the Australian parliament can probably be forgiven for being far too polite to ever raise the suggestion that the acronym ANU may one day lead to problems.
And so it is in the year 2023, that Australia's highest ranked university has to regularly remind people not to add a possessive 's' to their name in headlines, lest the web address be shortened like so:
Tumblr media
Likewise the unfortunately named ANU Sports has to go to great lengths to make sure that their name never appears as an acrostic, or on a single line without spaces:

But the award absolutely must go to the ANU Soccer Club magazine, cheekily named 'SCUM' by a student in the 90s much to the ongoing horror of design teams to this day

Did you know that the name of the city of Canberra is an anglicisation of the original people of the area, the Kanberri, as stated by the national archives. Other proposed names were Austral, Australville, Hopetoun, Myola, Home or Wattleton. King O’Malley, minister for home affairs suggested Shakespeare! The capital city of Australia could have been called fucking Wattleton! Sounds like a joint in rural Vic with a population of 60 and 3 pubs with a crosstown footy rivalry treated like life or death

Australia’s Richest Woman Demands Removal of her Portrait From Exhibition
Art is subjective. And while many artists long to share their work with the world, there’s no guarantee that the audience will understand it, or even like it.
That certainly seems to be the case with a painting by indigenous artist Vincent Namatjira, which includes a portrait of Australia’s richest person, mining magnate Gina Rinehart.
Rinehart has reportedly called for the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) to remove her portrait, one of 21 individual works that make up a single piece in Namatjira’s exhibition “Australia in Colour,” from display.
The exhibition has been running at the gallery in the Australian capital, Canberra, since March.

Other subjects in the piece include the late Queen Elizabeth II, American musician Jimi Hendrix, Australian Aboriginal rights activist Vincent Lingiari and the former Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison.
Australian media has reported that Rinehart approached the NGA’s director and chair to request the painting’s removal.
The NGA said in a statement Thursday that it “welcomes the public having a dialogue on our collection and displays.”
“Since 1973, when the National Gallery acquired Jackson Pollocks’ Blue Poles, there has been a dynamic discussion on the artistic merits of works in the national collection, and/or on display at the Gallery,” the NGA statement continued. “We present works of art to the Australian public to inspire people to explore, experience and learn about art.”
Namatjira said in a statement that he paints “people who are wealthy, powerful, or significant – people who have had an influence on this country, and on me personally, whether directly or indirectly, whether for good or for bad.”
“Some people might not like it, other people might find it funny but I hope people look beneath the surface and see the serious side too,” Namatjira added.
Rinehart has an estimated net worth of $30.2 billion USD, according to Forbes. She “remained unshakable” at the top of Forbes’ Australia’s 50 Richest list for 2024, the outlet reported in February.

Adut Akech was born in Sudan (in an area that later became part of South Sudan), but was raised in Kakuma, Kenya. Akech was born on Christmas Day, on the way to Kenya. She was 7 years old when she moved from Kenya along with her mother to Adelaide, Australia as South Sudanese refugees seeking asylum. They also had relatives there. Akech has five siblings.
Tumblr media
Akech was known as "Mary", her Christian second name in Adelaide, as Australian teachers found it difficult to pronounce her name.
Tumblr media
Be proud of African names, and stop falling into the trap of saying all African names are hard to pronounce. Like European names are easy

1989: Australian voting laws are changed to require political parties to have 100 members before they can run for office, after the Australian Capital Territory election ballot sees entries from The Sun Ripened Warm Tomato Party, The Party! Party! Party!, and The Surprise Party.
Even with this requirement, The No Self-Government Party and their rivals The Abolish Self-Government Coalition gain almost 20% of the vote, gaining 4 seats in the Capital's parliament.

Teddy climbed his way through the Mount Ainslie Nature Preserve until he was standing above Canberra and able to look out over Australia’s capital city. The Molonglo River and the Anzac Parade were easily discernable below. Teddy figured if he spent more time around this city he might be able to distinguish  other prominent features too, especially on this clear Australian day. Do you have a favorite capital?
