"She was drunk! Pie-eyed, she was smashed! I think you'd know from the books your pa left you, that your ma's got... . uhhh whatchamacallit alcoholic personality? It comes under the letter A!"
nobody liked my power of the dog review on letterboxd so im putting the gist of it on here like peter and phil are such interesting foils but phil only sees peter as a mirror of himself which leads to his ultimate demise. like he sees who he was before meeting bronco henry in peter cause he only sees peter as being effeminate and sensitive when those are masks that peter uses to make the people around him feels more at ease. peter’s father literally tells him that hes worried that peter is too cold and uncaring and peter tells phil this and is immediately dismissed. phil refuses to acknowledge that peter could be anyone but the same as he was because he wants so desperately to be bronco henry and feel the connection he had with bronco henry with someone else and can only conceptualize that desire in terms of a relationship hes already experienced. and its his downfall because he cant see that peter might actually care about his mother in a way that he never did or see that peter would be anything less than devoted to him the same way that he was devoted to bronco henry but in reality peter didnt need phil to become bronco henry he already saw the dog he didnt need a guide and if phil had seen that maybe he couldve survived instead hes in the ground and his rope is under peters bed.
