Also, content-lock-free link. [Technically it's not a paywall but it is annoying]
Keep pressuring Western governments. This is proof that it can work.

"Canada will halt future arms sales to Israel following a non-binding vote in the house of commons. The foreign affairs minister, Mélanie Joly, told the Toronto Star her government would halt future arms shipments. “It is a real thing,” she said on Tuesday [March 19].
The decision follows a parliamentary motion, introduced by the New Democratic party (NDP), that called on the governing Liberals to halt future arms exports to Israel. The New Democrats, who are supporting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s minority government, have expressed frustration with what they see as his failure to do enough to protect civilians in Gaza.
The motion – which passed 204-117 with the support of Liberals, Bloc Québécois and the Green party – also called on Canada to work “towards the establishment of the state of Palestine.""

Did you know that people on the Ontario Disability Support Program can only leave the province for a maximum of 30 days?
Excerpt from an email I got: "Ontario Disability Support Program is for people living in Ontario. You can be out of Ontario for up to 30 days in a row when you are on the Ontario Disability Support Program. If you are out of Ontario for more than 30 days in a row your trip must be pre-approved to maintain your eligibility for the Ontario Disability Support Program. Your monthly declaration will help keep your file updated."
"And ODSP can give you income support even if you're away more than 30 days.
They do this if they agree that you need to be away:
for health reasons,
to attend a college or university, or
for what ODSP calls "exceptional circumstances""
But only with their approval.
If anyone on Ontario disability support leaves the province for more than 30 days without government approval, we risk losing our benefits.
This is ableism. This is restricting our rights and forcing us to go through ODSP (which is notoriously slow) in order to leave not just the country, but the province, for 30 days of more.

hey guys, i’m going to keep this brief. today on wednesday, september 20th, 2023, there are anti-lgbt+ protests going on in nationwide in canada (over 77 cities, last i heard). while there are many counter-protests going on in support of the lgbt community, what’s happening is still deeply alarming and deserves more coverage.
• here you can donate to canada’s first trans legal defence fund, which was set up to counter rampant anti-trans discrimination. it’ll be used to fund constitutional cases, support individual plaintiffs in suing anti-trans actors in courts of law, and provide direct support to trans people (in the form of grants, to help pay for their name changes, as well as other court fees).
• list of counter-protests going on today can be found here.
• for my fellow canadians, you can sign this petition to tell the government of canada to #act4queersafety. there is also an option to donate here.
• you can also write to your MHAs and MPs about rise in hate and to demand action! current members of parliament and where they are located can be found here.
for those in need of support right now, here are some hotlines you can call:
• lgbt youthline: www.youthline.ca/1-800-268-9688 txt 647-694-4275

All of Keywords Studios’ unionized QA workers were laid off from the studio in late September after Dragon Age: Dreadwolf developer BioWare declined to continue its contract in August. The QA workers, who were contracted to assist with playtesting and quality assurance at BioWare Edmonton, won their union vote in June 2022. All 16 eligible voters said “yes” to joining United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Union, Local No. 401. It was a historic vote, making the group the first games industry union in Canada. Keywords Studios workers were in bargaining with the company when they were laid off following the news of 50 job cuts at BioWare itself.

BREAKING| Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denies that Israel has been committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza saying that his country rejects the premise of South Africa's case at the ICJ, which was described as fact-based and compelling. [@/ QudsNen on X]
do you know how many more unmarked graves there are in this settler country? It's unfathomable and heartbreaking just thinking about it.
there was also people who made unauthorized trips to 'dig up' sacred spaces in Kamloops this past year in order to 'disprove' that remains of Indigenous children were being found -which is inherently genocidal apologism.
Canada wants to erase this history of genocide against Indigenous people on Turtle Island through denialism and political lip service about reconciliation and recognition. and it's beyond horrifying.

Canadian Court Accuses Trudeau of Misusing Power
A Canadian court has found Justin Trudeau's crackdown on the 2022 Truckers' protest "unreasonable" and "not justified". The Canadian PM had used emergency powers to drive out anti-vax protesters from the capital. Palki Sharma tells you why this court verdict is a wake-up call for Trudeau. 🤔

Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar was brazenly shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C. on June 18. Nijjar, a supporter of a Sikh homeland in the form of an independent Khalistani state, had been branded by the Indian government as a "terrorist" and accused of leading a militant separatist group — something his supporters have denied. "Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar," Trudeau said Monday in a speech to the House of Commons. "Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty."

Canadians worry as Meta news block broadens, impacts international news | Canada
Earlier, when the conversation about Bill C-18 began to pick up publicly, people assumed the news block would only affect Canadian outlets. This was not the case.
Many are shocked that several international news sources have also disappeared from Facebook and Instagram in Canada.
“Essentially, these are digital sanctions and a complete information blackout imposed on a sovereign country — a show of force to an elected government,” commented Toronto Star journalist Saba Eitizaz on Thursday. “Access to information is a fundamental human right.”

PROTECT TRANS KIDS
I live in Alberta, Canada, which you may have heard is the latest province to introduce their version of "parental rights" legislation.
Here are some of the things our premier, Danielle Smith, promised to do on Wednesday;
mandate teachers report to parents (and ask permission if the child is younger than 16) if a child wants to use a different name/different pronouns in class
mandate permission forms anytime a teacher wants to mention gender or sexual orientation
ban children under the age of 16 from accessing hormones or puberty blockers
ban top & bottom surgery for anyone under the age of 18 (bottom, surgery is already illegal for anyone under 18 in Canada)
ban transgender women from competing in womens sports
These laws have been called "draconian" and were not drafted with consideration from medical, pediatric, or LGBT organizations. Danielle Smith is pandering to the social conservative wing of her party and putting queer kids in danger because of it.
"Parental Rights" are a sham that ignores the lived reality of queer kids.
I've spent the past few days feeling angry and heartbroken, and I wanted to spread awareness and share with my American followers because I haven't seen many news outlets outside of Canada covering this.

A resident physician at the University of Ottawa's faculty of medicine who was suspended over pro-Palestinian social media posts says he's been reinstated but has no plans to return to the institution. Dr. Yipeng Ge, 29, was sanctioned by the university last November after it got several complaints about a series of pro-Palestinian posts he'd made, ones that included references to "apartheid" and "settler colonialism." At the time of his suspension, Ge had been a fourth-year public health and preventive medicine resident and was completing a residency at the Public Health Agency of Canada. His research has focused on Indigenous health, anti-racism and decolonization.

"In short: Nine million Canadian women of reproductive age will have the full cost of their contraception covered as part of a major health care reform, the government says.
The reform includes the most widely used contraceptive methods, such as IUDs, contraceptive pills, hormonal implants and the day after pill.
What's next? The government must still win the approval of Canada's provinces, which administer health care."
"Canada will cover the full cost of contraception for women, the government says as it highlights the first part of a major health care reform.
The government will pay for the most widely used contraceptive methods, such as IUDs, contraceptive pills, hormonal implants or the day after pill, for the nine million Canadian women of reproductive age, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Sunday at a press conference in a pharmacy in Toronto.
"Women should be free to choose the contraceptives they need without cost getting in the way. So, we're making contraceptives free," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on X, formerly Twitter.
The announcement fleshes out the first part of a bill unveiled in February that, once completed, would mark the biggest expansion of Canada's publicly funded health care system in decades.
This new regime will also cover the cost of diabetes medication for some 3.7 million Canadians.
The cost of the new system and timing of the launch have not been announced...
The government must now win the approval of Canada's provinces, which actually administer health care, for this new system. Alberta and Quebec have already said they would opt out.
The pharmacare plan — as it is called locally — follows protracted negotiations between Mr Trudeau's Liberal minority government and a small leftist faction in parliament.
The New Democratic Party agreed to prop up the Liberals until the fall of 2025, on the condition that the government immediately launch the drug program."

The largest Canadian newspapers have given disproportionate attention to the deaths of Israelis, portrayed Israelis in more humanized ways, characterized their deaths as more worthy of indignation, and more often identified who was responsible for killing them, a comprehensive comparison of reporting on the deaths of Israelis and Palestinians reveals.
The Breach analyzed thousands of sentences in coverage in The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, and National Post from Oct. 7 to Nov. 24. The study found that dozens of Palestinian deaths were required to merit just one mention in the newspapers, while there was one mention of Israeli deaths for every two Israelis who died.
The study shows a pattern of anti-Palestinian bias in Canada’s establishment media, sanitizing political violence against Palestinians and unequally stirring emotions about Israeli deaths.

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in Canada
Suppose you are an Indigenous woman or girl in Canada. In that case, whether you live on reserve or in an urban area, regardless of your age or socio-economic status—the simple fact that you are an Indigenous woman or girl means that you are at least three times more likely to experience violence and at least six times more likely to be murdered than any other woman or girl in Canada.
Why are the rates of violence so high?
1. Racist and sexist stereotypes lead perpetrators to believe that they can get away with committing acts of violence against Indigenous women and girls.
2. The many legacies of colonialism increase the risk of experiencing violence—from impoverishment to the lasting harm from residential schools to the disempowerment of Indigenous women and girls in their own communities.
3. Decades of government and law enforcement inaction to end the violence.
