I noticed while watching ‘Grave’ recently when Willow is taunting Buffy with her retorts about bringing her back to life that she says “It was me that took you out of the Earth. Well, now… the Earth wants you back.”

Er… actually Buffy took herself out of the Earth. Willow saw to that by being so careless with what she was doing in her effort to bring her back to life without digging her up and taking her out of her coffin so she wouldn’t have to dig her way out of six feet of Earth.

I know it’s probably just a difference in semantics and honestly, Willow wasn’t in the best state of mind when she said it, but I found it an interesting thing for her to say. Almost as if she actually believed that she did everything right. That nothing important was forgotten about or missing. The whole point was that Buffy was too important to lose. That she was needed. But did she think about what was important to her? Did she think of what she needed? Nah, she didn’t.

She did what she did because she knew she could do it. There was no other reason really despite telling herself and trying to convince herself that there was. I’m pretty certain she was so adamant on the “Hell dimension” assumption because of this factor. She wanted to absolve herself of any wrongdoing in it. Imagine that she was the benevolent, selfless hero… when in reality - everything about doing it was selfish.

Just something I observed when watching ‘Grave’ recently. Her words, even as Dark Willow - who throws all pretences of appearing “the good guy” out the window - are still catering to her falsely perceived ideals that she was always the hero of her own story.

Was she really that afraid of exposure by Buffy that even at the end of life for the both of them, she still kept up the ruse that she was the only true saviour? You have to be selfish and arrogant to think like that. To believe something like that could possibly be true.

That you could literally kill the world and still think yourself god - the benevolent ruler and saviour of it.

Gods power corruption does a real number on Willow. It’s true. There’s so much more going on otherwise. But initially this was what started the entire spiral of both Willow and Buffy’s Season 6 downfall. The constant insistence that Willow knew what she was doing with the immense magical power that she had. When it actuality - it was what was creating all chaos. It was what was causing all the destruction and pain.

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” will always be such a powerful phrase regarding how quickly and easily one so unfamiliar with having absolute power falls from grace.
