a/n: me? remembering to write? shocker. literally struggled with this lol but i'm here and i'm trying to write more in order to be a productive member of society. also i'm so in love with Isaac it's not funny *cries*

It never really got cold in Beacon Hills, considering it was located in California. Still, when temperatures started to fall to a mild climate, it signaled to the teen population that winter was fast approaching. And with that came Winter Ball. Which is all you've been able to think about.
To anyone who would ask, it wasn't that big of a deal– but you secretly thought about it. All the outfits, the decorations, the romanticism of it all. Maybe it was the hopeless romantic in you, especially as someone who has never had a date. It used to not bother you; you were happily involved in your studies or worrying about being murdered by a supernatural at any time. But then you started spending more time with a certain werewolf and thought it wouldn't be that bad to care about that stuff.
"Do you think Scott is going to ask me?" Kira said, scaring you out of your thoughts as you closed your locker. You took in the dark-haired female beside you, her eyes questioning and fingers tapping her books. "Will I have to ask him?"
"He'll ask you," you sighed. "He trips over his shoelaces every time he walks down the hall."
"Maybe he didn't tie them well?" Kira looked down the hall as if the boy in question would show up.
"He likes you," you sent a small smile. Kira relaxed slightly, loosening her shoulders before facing you with a questioning glance.
"Do you have anyone to go to the dance with?" Kira inquired, plain curiosity in her eyes. You knew, though, that she wanted more info on if you liked anyone. Even with her as a good friend, you rarely discussed those feelings with anyone. Usually, you were the one everyone else confided in.
"Might not even go," you averted your eyes as Kira slapped your arm lightly.
"You have to go!" Kira begged. "I can't go alone if Scott asks me."
"Kira, you won't be alone if you go with Scott." She silenced you again with a sharp look.
"You know what I mean," Kira sighed. "I just don't want you to shy away from something you might enjoy. Especially when I am certain some eligible young bachelor or bachelorette would be interested in going with you."
You pressed your back into your locker, looking down at your scuffed shoes rather than the girl beside you. You glanced up when you caught sight of Scott and Isaac in your peripheral vision. Kira grew still as she saw Scott shuffling closer to you to hide. You tried shoving her, but the kitsune was an immovable rock as Scott and Isaac got closer. You saw Scott's eyes light up as he caught sight of Kira, and you wanted to smile when Kira's cheeks deepened. You made it a point to not stare at Isaac next to him, even if you really liked the blue sweater he was wearing. It's purely observational, with no lurking feelings behind it.
"Hey guys," Scott smiled, holding his backpack straps like a kindergartener on the first day of school. "Whatcha guys up to?"
"Talking about the dance," you answered right as Kira tried to pass your prior conversation off as nothing. She shot you an angry look, but you hid the smile on your face as Scott perked up. "Kira wants to go but worries about not having a date." The look Kira shot you could be akin to being burned in the seventh circle of Hell, but you knew that your fair-weathered friend would've spent the whole time pondering if Scott liked her rather than making a move.
"I don't have a date either," Scott grimaced, trying to pass off as a smile. Kira visibly perked up, and you and Isaac barely hid smiles. "Maybe we can go together?"
The glee that overtook Kira's eyes was radiant, and she nodded enthusiastically. "I would love that," Kira grinned.
"Great," Scott beamed. "Can I walk you to class?"
Kira grabbed her books, sending you a look that said, "We'll talk later," while happily following the alpha wolf. You turned towards Isaac, feeling your heart start pitter-patter as he made eye contact with you. He gave you a shy smile, fidgeting with the books.
"They seem happy," you sighed, trying to break whatever tension you imagined.
"I'm glad it worked out," Isaac said, his steel blue eyes connecting to yours. "Scott was getting annoying."
"So was Kira," you slyly smiled. "What about you?" Isaac looked at you inquisitively. "Are you…going to the dance?"
"I don't think so," he mumbled, averting his eyes briefly. You felt your heart sink in disappointment. Luckily, you were spared a response with the bell ringing.
"See you around, Lahey," you smiled jokingly, trying to brush off any lingering feelings you had. You turned on your heel and walked off towards the direction of US History. You barely paid attention in class, though, your thoughts consumed with the micro-interaction by your locker. You didn't like Isaac, right? You just were disappointed a good friend wouldn't be there at a dance you might not even be attending. Totally rational feelings. At least that was the mantra you kept repeating till the end of the school day.
You managed to keep most Winter Ball-related thoughts at bay for the rest of the week while you helped the pack deal with whatever issue. Sometimes, it felt like you guys lived in a CW show with a villain of the week, but somehow, fighting and scheming became part of your routine. You would never admit it to anyone, but you did enjoy the research portion of your problems. Even if it was you and Stiles eating pizza in his room while staring at way too many red strings. It made you feel wanted in a way that you haven't before. By the end of the week, though, the only research you were doing was for a class project. You were already debating when you could (reasonably) quit for the night and curl up with some Netflix or Hulu. Your phone rang by the fifth academic journal, and you glanced to see Lydia's name lighting up the screen.
"Hello," you said, setting your phone on speaker.
"Dress shopping tomorrow. Are you in or out?" Lydia asked on the other line.
"For what?"
"Winter Ball, obviously," Lydia scoffed, the sound of rustling clothes in the background telling you she was going through her closet. "The fact I've waited this long when it's two weeks out is actually ridiculous, but with our life, I guess it's not surprising."
"I might not even go, Lyds."
"Don't be like that," Lydia sighed on the other line. "What's holding you back?"
"Kind of lame to go to a dance without a date," you mumbled, shrinking back into your chair. Maybe if you curled up in a ball and became a turtle, no one would ever ask things of you again.
"All of your friends will be there, and most girls will probably ditch their dates anyway," Lydia chimed. "And besides, who cares? I don't have a date either, and I'm still going."
"I thought you were going with Stiles."
"In a completely work-related situation," Lydia coughed, even as you rolled your eyes. "He knows that."
"I'm sure he'll figure it out by the tenth corsage he buys you," you snickered.
"Just come tomorrow; Kira is joining. We'll get dresses, lattes, and have a day where werewolves don't intrude." You bit the inside of your cheek, staring at your laptop screen as the words melted into mush in your brain. You could at least hang out, even if you didn't buy anything.
"I will come," you amended, almost hearing Lydia's excitement from the phone. "I won't promise that I'll buy anything."
"Grab you at 11 a.m., be ready," Lydia chimed, hanging up the phone. You sighed and put your head in your arms, wondering what you got yourself into.
It was a reminder that waking up by 10 a.m. was a struggle for you. You barely dragged yourself out the door as Lydia spammed your phone, pleading for your coffee as you slid into the car. Kira laughed at you as you curled up in a ball and muttered about sweet death taking you soon. Lydia drove up to the coffee place, an ivy-strewn brick building called Cafe Allegro, and you bolted out of the car and through the doors. The smell of roasting coffee beans and the whir of the espresso machines welcomed you like a blanket on a cold night, and you wondered if you could ask that when you die, it could be in a pile of coffee beans. You ordered your latte, not having to wait long to get your order as you stood off the side, inhaling the fresh scent. Having been absorbed in your calm, you didn't notice the boy standing next to you.
"You are really into your coffee," Isaac remarked, scaring you out of your stupor. You made a pathetic yelp, grimacing as a chuckle escaped his lips.
"It's too early."
"It's almost noon."
"Too early," you sighed, sipping the heavenly goodness in your hand. "Why are you here?"
"Scott and Stiles dragged me to the suit rental place and told me they didn't want me left alone to wallow or something like that," Isaac laughed, shoving his hands in his pockets. He was wearing a heather gray henley today that you were enjoying and trying your hardest not to notice. "If it's so early, why are you here?"
"Similar reason. Lydia and Kira dragged me dress shopping," you glanced up at him before looking around the shop and realizing that your comrades were hiding on the opposite side. Annoyingly leaving you with the person who gives you immense jitters.
"Do you think you'll get a dress?" Isaac inquired.
"Not sure why, don't have a good reason to," you mumbled, staring at your cup. Gosh, your heart was beating fast, and your stomach hurt. Maybe you should've gotten something calming like herbal tea.
"You should get one," Isaac coughed, looking visibly uncomfortable. For a second, you worried that you were annoying him. "You would look…pretty."
"Thanks," your cheeks burned. "Then, you should get a suit." You swallowed, feeling like your head was in a whirlpool. Isaac's eyes looked at you with something akin to interest, but you passed it off as your caffeine-filled hallucinations.
"We should go to the dance together," Isaac said quickly, tensing slightly as he awaited your reaction. Your eyes widened, and you had to remember what solid ground felt like as his words sank in.
"I would like that very much," you breathed. Isaac's demeanor softened, relief flooding his eyes. He bit his lip to stifle his grin, which was the worst mistake he could've made as now all you were focusing on was his lips. "Gotta go," you announced, bolting from him before he could say anything else or before you jumped him at a coffee shop. You made it to Lydia and Kira and dragged them out of the door, not bothering to look back for fear of embarrassment. Lydia had mild complaints, but mostly, Kira gave you a knowing look.
"Is there a reason for this rush?" Kira asked, eyebrows lifted in question.
"I need a dress," you said. Lydia and Kira shared a grin and you knew there was a specific reason they left you with Isaac in the cafe. You wanted to strangle them and kiss them for it.
The ride to the dress shop was short, but the anxiety building like a knot in your stomach persisted long after. Isaac asked you to the dance. He asked you for some unknown reason. You guys were friends and occasionally worked together. Still, you struggled to have a conversation before that didn't end with you saying something weird and making it awkward. You used to chalk it up to just not having common interests. Still, if you admitted the truth to yourself, you would know it's because you had a giant raging crush on the werewolf. Words were not in your vocabulary around him.
Entering the dress shop (a cute place called Laura Jane's Boutique), you were suddenly reminded why you didn't really want to go in the first place. You love pretty things, but the over-glitzy dresses and jumpsuits are not your style. At least Kira looked as out of place as you. Lydia led the charge, though, immediately saying "no" to many dresses on the rack and holding up some options for you and Kira. You did love it, though, Lydia caring enough to try and find the perfect dress for her friends. It made you feel wanted.
You wandered into one of the back sections, skipping the colors you would never wear. What was Isaac's favorite color? Maybe that's the color of dress you should go with. Your inner voice told you it shouldn't matter what color you wear. Not just because you value your independence but because Isaac would love it either way.
You pushed some dresses aside on one of the racks, stopping at a shorter-length dress. It had bell sleeves and a sweetheart neckline. It was simple but not understated, and you loved it.
You went home that night feeling like you were on a cloud. Except, like all good things, your crippling insecurities had to rear its ugly head and make you start questioning everything. Laying in your bed, the dress still in its tissue-wrapped bag, you stared at the ceiling, debating what had happened. What if Isaac only asked you to the dance because it was convenient? Or worse, he was asked to by someone like Scott or Lydia? He probably didn't like you at all. Why would he? You were human. Unremarkable.
Vibrations could be felt in your head as your phone rang, and you begrudgingly grabbed at it without checking the caller ID. "Hello?" you grumbled.
"Hey," the tenor voice said from over the phone. "Can I come over?"
"Isaac?" you asked, sitting up in your bed. "Is everything okay?" Oh my gosh, was he hurt? Or rescinding his previous offer of the dance.
"I just want to see you," he breathed. "Is this a bad time?"
"Never," you answered quickly. "You can come over."
Ten minutes later, of anxious pacing in your room, you got a text from Isaac saying he had arrived. You ran downstairs to open the door, slightly winded from the rush. Isaac's face was illuminated by your porch lights, and all you could think about was how pretty he was.
"Hi," you spoke, looking up at him.
"Hi," Isaac smiled, "can I come in?" Nodding, you opened the door further so the golden-haired werewolf could enter. You gestured for him to follow, leading him to your room for privacy. You started to regret that decision when you realized that you had invited someone you were interested in into your bedroom. This was the plot of a bad romance novel.
"What brings you to my humble abode?" you inquire, twirling to face him.
"I came to check on you," Isaac glanced around your bedroom, smiling faintly at your posters on the wall. You watched his eyes catch on your corkboard, where a photo of the two of you at Derek's loft is in prime display. It was after saving the day, and Stiles had bought multiple tubs of ice cream to celebrate. Derek demanded why this "celebration" had to be at his place. However, Stiles had never once listened to Derek's complaints and hosted it anyway. You loved that picture and that memory.
"Check on me? I'm not in danger again, am I?" you smile, sitting on your bed and subconsciously grabbing one of your stuffed animals.
"Kira was over to see Scott and mentioned you might be 'spiraling into oblivion,'" Isaac turned to you, quoting Kira's words. Sometimes, you wondered if that girl was telepathic with how well she knew you.
"Maybe a little," you mumbled, fidgeting with your fluffy friend. Isaac hesitantly sat next to you on the bed, his weight causing you to sink closer to him.
"Can I ask why, or should I just infer?" he chimed, grabbing another stuffed friend you have and twirling it around. It was a blue chicken from a video game you play, with a cute pink gizzard and round body. "I like this one."
"Do tell," you chuckled, watching him squish the chicken plush.
"It's squishy," he muttered, patting it on the head before setting it carefully beside him. Your heart wanted to burst at the small interaction.
"I was worried about the dance," you responded, answering his previous question. He gave you a sidelong glance, asking you to elaborate. "I don't know why you asked me."
"I like you."
"Like me, or like me?" you whispered, barely able to get your voice heard. Unfortunately, Isaac is sitting next to you and has a werewolf hearing, so he didn't miss a thing. He hesitantly grabbed the stuffed animal from your fidgeting hands, putting it aside before carefully holding your hand in his own.
"I think you're amazing," he smiled, looking at you with eyes the color of a lakeshore. "So yes, I like you."
"I like you too," you breathed, a smile gripping your lips. "When did you get good at socializing?"
Isaac laughed, still holding your hand as he absentmindedly traced shapes on your knuckles. "Had lots of time to practice conversations while trapped in a freezer."
"You need therapy."
"Probably," he laughed, grinning at you before tucking a piece of hair behind your ear. Your breath caught in your throat as he looked at you. "Can I kiss you?"
You barely managed a nod, your heart thumping loudly in your chest as Isaac kissed your lips. It was soft and somewhat hesitant, like he didn't want you to run away afterward. You boldly deepened the kiss, as it felt like water filled your ears and a marching band played in your heart. The hand he wasn't holding you used to capture his face, his free hand lightly gripping the outside of your thigh. It wasn't fireworks but an ocean at high tide with waves crashing against the shore. And you didn't mind it one bit; you hated fireworks anyway. When Isaac did pull away, his breath was warm against your lips, and you had to remember to let out a shaky breath before you hyperventilate. Isaac kissed your cheek, pulling back to look at you with pure adoration on his face.
Kissing him again was pure bliss, and you couldn't help but look at him with awe. You weren't sure how you were granted something this good when you've spent your whole life dreaming of something worth half of this. Still, you wouldn't exchange it for anything. It meant you got to spend Winter Ball with the most handsome boy on the dance floor.

I Will Write A Fic For You If You Donate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund!
I came across the super cool organization Fandom Trumps Hate just recently (as of this post actually), and unfortunately I learned of its existence too late to apply to be one of the writers for this year. Since I don't want to wait a whole year to do some good with my love of writing, I'm holding my own little auction! Let's use that autistic special interest for good!
How Much I Will Write: 1K-5K words (if I end up writing more, well, yay for the lucky auction winner I guess, but that's what I'm willing to commit to)
What Fandoms I Will Write For: Baldur's Gate 3, The Dragon Prince, Good Omens, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Loki (just... the character. I will write so many things involving that character)
What I Will (and Will Not) Write: Character x Character, Character x reader, Character x OC even if you can give me enough about your OC, are all good! Not into shipping? No worries! I love the platonic and I can even just write a character study or a songfic. I am willing to write up to M rating for this, so some spicy stuff, but not pure smut. Any of the Main Warning Tags on AO3, save Major Character Death (gotta love that angst), are off limits. If you are worried that I can't write your idea before you want to bid, go ahead and shoot me a message before you bid and I'll let you know! You can also check out my pinned post for my masterlist of past fics. I have written all the examples I have given as requests before.

i saw this post today where this person was talking abt fandom racism and was pointing out some real issues within my fandom and favorite ship that I too had noticed… but then kept bringing it back to the lack of one particular other ship they liked, when it's like, no that's not the problem, and that ship is unpopular because those characters have zero romantic or sexual chemistry and barely any scenes together. (it was really funny that someone had reblogged this to take their 'lack of seeing this one character in a sexual way in fic miiight be racist' complaint to be like 'i think you're right! we should have more fic about [a long list of different ships involving that character with people they have ACTUAL chemistry with].' it was really funny. ofc op totally missed the point they were making there.) anyway i just feel like way too many useful conversations about this stuff are ruined by people making it about shipping or other really subjective fandom preferences. i get that this is because something like 'number of fics X ship or character has on ao3' is an objective measure, and something like 'level of orientalism in how a lot of people are writing this desi character' is not, but i wish people would realize it tends to alienate more people that it converts. and ime, it's often the people who maybe would most benefit from hearing those criticisms (e.g. are writing unintentionally racist stuff in their works, and are someone who would want to know about that and how to do it differently) who tune it out the second you make it into insulting their shipping preferences.
i mean, there WAS some real racism in the star wars sequels fandom, including among the fanfic/shipping side. not just the shitty dudes harassing kelly marie tran. we saw the really bizarre 'predator' language people directed at john boyega just for making some joke posts on instagram about disliking reylo and its shippers. it was the very classic racist thing where people see something as automatically more threatening when a black man does it. ....but how many people had already tuned all that out because the people most outspoken about the racism in the fandom kept reducing it to 'if you ship reylo over finnrey, or kylux over finnpoe, you're a racist'? it's like a boy who cried wolf thing. if you've shown that you can't uncouple serious discussions and concerns from just being pissy that your otp is not more popular, people are going to see you as someone who can't be taken seriously and then ignore you when you do have a real complaint. it's like how i'm sure that some of stitch's essays are thoughtful and important, but i have no desire to read stuff by someone who is infamous for harassing people just for what they ship. i don't feel like i can take any of that person's judgments about fandoms i'm not in, for instance, seriously.
that's not to say fandom preferences in shipping can't ever be influenced by racism (or other 'isms') but is it ever really *that* specifically that is the problem, or the broader pattern it is part of? and i feel like 'maybe fandom is a little too focused on het and slash ships between two young skinny conventionally attractive white people' is a message more people are open to than 'your specific white M/M or F/M otp is racist'
anyway it reminds me of the stuff i've seen sometimes in academic fandom studies about how you can't really honestly study a fandom where you're deeply mired in its discourse - you need to focus your work on fandoms that you're familiar with but not in that way. and i think that maybe also applies to some of these discussions about fandom racism and misogyny. maybe you're just going to have better takes on something when you're not deeply invested in other unrelated arguments about it, like about which ship is the most popular. like i could not care less about star wars shipping and have zero take in reylo vs. finnrey, so that's why i feel like i could trust my perception that the way a small minority of reylos were posting about john boyega's instagram posts was racist. it didn't matter if he was genuinely being a jerk to them or about their ship. he obviously wasn't a 'predator' and it was pretty telling language for a group of largely white people to use about a black man making fun of their ship on a different social media site.

I wanted to say something for an anonymous comment about feeling less embarrassed of having feelings for Rocket.
I must say I totally understand that.
A month ago, when GOTG VOL 3 was released, I went to see it at the cinema with my mother, I spent the whole movie very excited for Rocket, but right in that scene where he is on the verge of death and he meets Lylla again, SOMETHING INSIDE IT CHANGED ABOUT ME, because when they were hugging I realized I was JEALOUS, and in my mind I thought "OH NO, IT'S HAPPENING TO ME AGAIN", because I always fall for characters that might be unconventional or weird to other people , then I start looking for fics and I realize that there are not many for the same reason, or there are many where it is more platonic and I think "IT IS NOT ENOUGH"
And it's more complicated for me because my first language is not English and in my language there is NOTHING.
So meeting people who write Rocket the way I imagined really makes me very happy.
I'm even thinking about writing some one shots myself but it's hard, I've never written NSFW and I find it kind of funny that I want to start with Rocket.

Suitable for any smut involving Rocket! (Looking at you guys, roquill shippers. Don’t worry, I welcome all ships on my blog <3)
This is supposed to be a writing smut guide specifically meant for Rocket so I’m not gonna go into the basics of writing smut, but if you’re a total beginner, here’s some pointers to help :
the genitals, legs, muscles, brain : main places that tend to be the most stimulated, exhausted or absolutely wiped. That being said, you can use these as a starting point for describing the feelings the characters or the reader may feel in the moment.
besides the main thing, you could try to set the mood by maybe mentioning how the moans sounded like, (screams, squeals, cries etc.) and other things the characters were doing to ground them in the moment, like gripping the sheets, gripping the other person’s shoulder or hips, etc.
Okay, so, about Rocket in particular …
Yeah, of course writing smut about a fucking Raccoon isn’t going to be fucking easy. But don’t worry, as someone who has studied all 3 gotg films and slowed down quite possibly every single Rocket clip in existence (enough to know Rocket … is genuinely CANONICALLY is very particular/skilled with his fingers, he knows where he’s putting them and knows EXACTLY which buttons to press on any tech, so … definitely good at using his fingers if you catch my drift) I think I might have gotten the hang of it to help some of you guys out.
So first off, when I write Rocket smut I always imagine he’s his comic height instead of his mcu height (don’t search it up, you’re just gonna be depressed about it trust me) so all you have to know is that if he pressed you up against a wall his head would be around your shoulder blade area. For missionary, he’s probably around your collarbone.
Rocket canonically has sharp and absolutely grown out nails. No, they’re not retractible. I’ve done research on this, but if you’d like to write him fingering someone, Rocket can have his nails trimmed.
It would hurt if Rocket bit you. Like, it would fucking bleed. So I’m sorry to say to those biting kink girlies (those are me hi) but Rocket can only afford to give you or someone else some nibbles on the skin unless you guys want some serious bloodplay on your hands. This is because he has protruding fangs on both his upper and lower row of teeth, his lower ones more prominent than the top.
Rocket can, however, eat you out. Don’t wanna get too into depth with this but basically his tongue can stick out his muzzle pretty well and his nose makes for a good clit-stimulator HAHAHAH
!!! : (this is going to be a description of the average raccoon penis so skip this if you don’t wanna know about this because you can DEFINITELY write Rocket smut without having to know this so please be free) I had to research this for a very specific request (pls ily shameless anon/pos) and I almost cried out of the loss of my sanity but anyway, raccoons have a baculum bone which is basically a bone in their penis that helps with copulation, its average length is about 4 inches but can be longer if you catch my drift. The genital itself is a like a rod with a ‘spiky’ end (it’s not actually spiky but it looks that way) compared to human genitalia, kind of like a cat’s but much longer and it is a very dark shade of brown or just plain black. Feel free to use any of these for a possible description if ever you need it, though I never really talk about it in fics, especially the whole ‘spiky’ thing. That being said, Rocket should not have an issue with size, as the the average human male genitalia is about five inches, meaning he can hit anyone’s g-spot just fine.

I really hope this somehow encouraged you to write that nsfw fic you wanted, and just know everyone’s got interests, it’s fine if not a lot of people irl are into Rocket that way, because that’s literally what the internet is for!

Hello! The conversation about careening had me wondering--how do you like to do research for your stories? Are there any topics or sources you particularly enjoy delving into or including in your work?
Hello, my friend!!! What a wonderful ask: thank you for these great questions.
After reflecting, I think I could describe my process as having two general categories: as-needed research and broader worldbuilding research.
The first category is a part of almost every fic I write, and it involves things like sourcing locations, verifying timelines, tracking down character names, and (very often) looking up what it feels like to receive various injuries. If it's a Star Wars fic, at least one Wookiepedia visit is a given (the raw materials page is a frequent hit). And there are likely to be a few other general internet searches I repeat several times ("aviation terms," for example, or "New Orleans plant life," depending on the fic and fandom).
The second category covers the exploratory reading and viewing I do for fics that involve more worldbuilding because they extend further outside (or completely outside) canon. The Codywan Pirate AU has me doing all kinds of targeted searches for naval ranks and sailing ship terminology, for example, but I've also been browsing maritime museums for descriptions of what life on ships was like from day to day (look at this cool page about sailor libraries and sailing literature!) and for images that give me a visual sense of the environment. I also love looking at digitized resources through academic libraries. When @festiveferret and I were collaborating on Citation Needed, an MCU professor AU in which history prof Tony is writing a monograph about weapons development during WWII, I used the online special collections at University of Massachusetts - Amherst to learn what the primary documents (enlistment records, ration cards, etc.) featured in the fic would look like. (Ferret then did incredible edits for the epistolary portion of the fic: this post has the collected documents.)
In a couple cases it's actually been the research that has come first and inspired the fic. The initial ideas for Separation, for example, which is a Top Gun fic that leans into the context of the AIDS crisis in the 80s and 90s, came from prep that I'd been doing for a queer literature class, so I was listening to music by queer bands in the period, reading poetry and essays about queer life in NYC and San Francisco (including this piece that discusses Nan Goldin, Thom Gunn's The Man with Night Sweats, "The Fall of 1992" by Randall Mann, and Alexander Chee's essay "After Peter"), and watching the documentary How to Survive a Plague, about the ACT UP movement. Much of that research informed the choices I made in writing the fic, even if it doesn't all appear directly.
Finally, I should confess that I am pretty self-indulgent with my fic research: I spend a lot of time studying and tracking things down when it's a subject I find interesting and/or when having more information will allow me to texture the choices I'm making in ways I personally find compelling; but I am also very unfussed about leaving other things vague or about fudging some details in service of the story. It's not at all out of the ordinary for me to spend 30 minutes looking up the names of camera models that hit shelves in 1991 and then write a sentence that says "when he gets off the carrier in mid-July, he goes to the mall" without specifying which carrier or which mall, because I couldn't be bothered to figure out the military logistics involved. This is one of the joys of writing fic for me: freedom to pour energy into those areas where research helps get me closer to things I want to discover and describe.

✦ How can I participate?
Create any kind of fanwork, post about it here and @ us using the appropriate tags! As long as it’s Malevolent and related to aromanticism/arospec identities, you’re good to go. Fics, art, cosplay, music, crafts, headcanons, etc; any and all types are welcome! We just ask that if you include an image in your post, please include an image description in the alt text or in the body of the post.
✦ Why aromanticism and not just queer?
While Malevolent is not an explicitly queer podcast, the show lends itself to queer readings, and as such has built an audience of predominantly LGBTQ+ folks. Due to the nature of the characters, the ways they relate to one another and their environment, we believe that particular respect should be given to arospec identities within the show, as in fandom such identities are typically overlooked in favor of romantic dynamics. The creators of this week are both aromantic and wanted to create an event that further explored those aspects of their favorite podcast :)
✦ Does it have to be strictly aromantic?
If you mean, does the content created have to be strictly and exclusively non-spectrum aromantic, then no. This event includes all kinds of aromanticism from all across the spectrum. You want to write a fic about John being grayro and falling in love with Oscar? Go for it! Wanna draw a comic about Arthur being a loveless aromantic? Be our guest!
However, we only ask that the main focus of the week be aromanticism and not other related orientations. Exclusively arospec content is rare in online spaces, and we'd like to change that.
✦ What if I don’t like a specific day’s prompt?
You’re welcome to go off-script and create anything you like as long as it relates to some aspect of arospec identity within the podcast. Posts off-script or without a prompt will be reblogged on the final day (Dec 10th.)
✦ What content is allowed/not allowed?
We encourage any and all varieties of fanwork and the content within it, as long as it remains on-topic and related to aromanticism. As the source material also deals with a variety of heavy and challenging content, we believe that listeners are well aware of their own limits and can curate their online experiences accordingly. That said, NSFW content and colloquial “triggering” content will be allowed and may be shared on this blog, as long as it remains in line with Tumblr’s policies, though we will do our best to tag accordingly; feel free to refer to our tag guide for examples. Any content that is discriminatory or categorised as hate speech (homophobia/transphobia, racism, sexism, ableism, etc) will not be shared.
✦ How does the pairings aspect work?
Alongside each day's prompt, we've added two suggested pairings of characters through which to explore the prompts. This is not mandatory, but if you’re unsure of what direction to take a specific prompt, those characters/pairings may serve as a guide to help you build a framework for that day. While the characters are suggested through “slash” pairings colloquially viewed as romantic, their involvement in a work can be through shipping character studies, or simply having the characters interact in some way.

While we cannot determine what participants will create over the week, it is safe to assume that spoilers for episodes of Malevolent will occur. We will tag #malevolent spoilers for content related to the most recent episode(s), as Part 38 will most likely be out by the time of the event. Beyond this, it would be unrealistic to tag any content relating to spoilers for any point in the show as such, as due to the storyline, almost everything would be tagged as such. Brock took a breath of air before entering the room. This experiment was supposed to be secret, so it seemed strange to him that mutants were involved.
Unless...
Brock shook his head; he wasn't supposed to worry about that. He nodded to Logan, who was also studying the project. Perhaps it was best if Brock kept his distance from the mutants; what was going on with them and their motives were none of his business. Under the dim flickering of the fluorescent lights, the darkness of the lab seemed to deepen, and for a moment, he even suspected that he might be trying to free the mutants who were in HYDRA's service.
Brock watched from one of the windows as the participants in his experiment struggled with exhaustion. Sleep deprivation has several interesting effects. They needed to know how long the soldier and others HYDRA considered their weapons could go without sleep.
From the beginning, The Soldier showed surprising stamina, as he was far more alert compared to the others.
A suspicion began to creep into Brock's mind. Could there be some kind of connection between the mutants and the experiment? Were they somehow involved in the sleep deprivation of the participants? He shook his head. He shouldn't let paranoia consume him; he sometimes got too nervous when overthinking, but he wasn't going to let anyone or anything stop him from advancing everything he had achieved within the organization.
With a gesture of resignation, he decided to approach Logan. He nodded his head in greeting, but Logan ignored him.
Perhaps it was best for Brock to keep his distance from the mutants. However, Logan's presence at the project still intrigued him—what was he doing there, and how did it connect to what they were doing?
Perhaps it was time to stop the experiment. Brock knew they would soon need the soldier for an important mission.
Still, Brock's suspicions were growing, especially since he had heard so much about the mutants who were with Professor X. Could Logan be manipulating the results somehow? Or maybe he had his own reasons for being there—reasons that Brock still couldn't figure out?
Brock approached Logan cautiously. He had to know their motives in case it was necessary to inform his superiors, should any of the enemies ever find out what they were doing there.
"Logan, can I talk to you for a moment?" Brock questioned.
The mutant nodded, though his expression was hard to read.
Brock took a moment before continuing, choosing his words carefully. "I've noticed some unusual behavior in the experiment reports. I'd like to know if you have any explanation for it."
"I don't know what you mean, Rumlow. I'm doing my job as I've been asked." Logan replied, frowning.
Brock nodded, but he wasn't convinced. Maybe somehow he should get to the bottom of it all.
First of all, he would watch Logan's every move, obviously very carefully, so he wouldn't get caught.
"Are you sure about this?" Jack asked Brock.
"I can't allow someone to jeopardize everything we have progressed; I need to know if they are friend or foe and all that it entails," Brock replied.

if i were to involve another language its gotta be clear the reader understands i only speak one and i have done everything in my power to not JUST utilize google translate.
but also to read other fics with another language involved, it helps if theres a footnote for clarity.

Doflamingo thought there was a way out of it, that he was immune to any surprises life tried to throw at him. But then someone he cared for threw a real curve-ball. A story about two boys risking the game called life.
my thoughts: i think this was one of the first dofladile stories i read. it is dark. that "creator chose not to use archive warnings" carries quite a bit of weight. there is some dubcon, graphic violence, drug use/abuse, torture, murder attempts, suicide attempts, offensive language, etc, etc, etc. very very heavy topics. absolutely not a happy ending, not a walk in the park by any means. that being said, the writing style is glorious. the storytelling kept me smacking the shit out of that "next chapter" button. the characterization is spot on for a modern AU, the incorporation of certain events and characters is just perfect. not to mention the intense conflict of interests. this writer has some other shorter dofladile stories as well, and some really fantastic crocorosi!!

my thoughts: one of my favorite authors, i just cannot get enough of their style. very stream-of-consciousness, mind-whirling, eye-candy of a read, every time. and every reread offers a little dose of something new. in this story, i am completely won over by the banter and characterization. i can be kind of picky with how certain characters are depicted, (especially characters like doflamingo) but haze has got the magic touch keeping their dynamic feeling lively and believable.

donquixote family stories
sometimes you just need some donquixote family shenanigans. you can tell i have a favorite author for when that craving strikes... mostly gen or T rated stories, fluff, humor and angst.

The Donquixote Family did not quite know what they were getting themselves into when they took in the strange baby with horns, a fin, and a mouthful of sharp teeth. They were far from an ordinary family, and Dellinger was far from an ordinary baby.
Jora discovers that it’s hard enough to raise a baby, much less a baby that bites, breaks fingers, and throws itself off the ship to swim before it can even walk. But Dellinger thrives under the doting care of Jora and his family. He grows to take the Corrida Coliseum by storm (and jazz hands), watches Baby 5 make bad relationship choices, tries to make Sugar smile, amasses a closet of the finest shoes in the New World, refuses to acknowledge gender norms, and sneaks out at night to go swimming with "his own kind."
But the reign of the Donquixote Family is not a permanent one.
A coming of age/slice of life story about growing up in a strange family, where 'normal' means something very different.
my thoughts: this is another one of those longer stories like Funny Games that stole my heart and ate it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. when i was watching dressrosa, i fell in love with dellinger. like a lot of the family, he didn't seem to have much of a backstory. and then i found THIS lovely story. ugh. i accidentally started rereading it while skimming over to write this summary, it's just, it's so good, i love the way the family is portrayed, i love the perspective and story beats, the various bumps along the road. highly recommend for any donquixote family fans.

my thoughts: this story focuses on an original character who is a devil-fruit wielding tailor! explains some of the questionable outfit choices worn by pirates across the globe in such a humorous, whimsical way. i just love the subtle details and theories! general focus on the donquixote family, but it branches out to other pirates and crews as well.

my thoughts: this story is so bittersweet. little reminder of "hey these evil pirates are human". really puts emphasis on the family as a family. second chapter is hysterical jora/giolla pov of getting her nails painted. a great light-hearted read!

my thoughts: i fell in love with this story so hard. finally another story with a rosinante & gladius friendship - although it's not that black and white, hehe. hence the angst tag. really great short read on rosinante's pov, nails that rosinante vs corazón dichotomy i'm obsessed with. and gladius is a prominent character!! what more could i ask

my thoughts: i think this is the angstiest story from this collection so far. nothing like a good cora lives AU, until you throw some guilt in there, some imprisoned dellinger. a not so friendly reminder that being raised as a pirate from a baby and then being sentenced to a life in prison after sixteen years is... an unpleasant existence, to say the least.
Field Trip ~ by 123_crowbar_solo

summary: Annoyed at his pupils using the words "mass murder" and "genocide" interchangeably, Doflamingo takes them on a field trip to teach them the difference.
my thoughts: one of those stories you feel bad for laughing at. if you appreciate some dark humor and like the donquixote family, especially doflamingo, this story is for you. has a delightfully satirical take on the donquixote pirates and doflamingo's strange whims/motivations, with a twist of his unavoidable mental health issues. love the approach to the strained brotherhood between rosinante and doflamingo, too.
doflamingo-centric stories
the psycho flamingo man got his own category, although it's kind of small (for now). these stories are stand-out character studies that do a great job tackling his wacky thought process.
Da Capo al Fine (second verse same as the first) ~ by freckledshoulderblades

genres: time travel, time-loop fix-it, character study, PTSD, trauma
status: incomplete, 2 chapters, 7,644 words
summary: Left unchecked in Impel Down, Doflamingo has a visitor that declares their ability - an awakened Toki Toki fruit - and their intent to send him off into the far past to repent for his sins. When he wakes up, he's eight years old again and his father is gently knocking on the door, asking after his well-being. He carries with him the knowledge of everything he's lived up until being sent back - killing his father, killing Rosinante, running the Donquixote Pirates - and every action he takes is colored by that information.
The Toki Toki user seems convinced there's a shred of good left in him, but he's not so certain anymore.
my thoughts: the relationship tag for this fic is "donquixote doflamingo/the consequences of his actions" and i think that just fits perfectly. when i think character study, i think of this story. strips doflamingo of his power, aside from his memories, and forces him to relive the most harrowing (and innocuous) period of his life. gets a little gory at times. this writer also has some fantastic stories about rosinante!!

my thoughts: another delight of a character study. the flow and prose of this is such a dream to read, for such a nightmare of a character. nails the motivations that spur doflamingo's heart and mind, and the mantras that must crawl around his mind. mind the tags if you check this one out!
cora & law stories
like many cora and law fans, i just don't think those several episodes of their adventure was enough. so, here are a few stories to remedy that absence! lots of hurt/comfort, adventure and angst lie ahead!

my thoughts: the worldbuilding in this story makes my mind spin. introduces and incorporates the idea of "what if there were different languages in OP?" with masterwork precision. and the way it ties into the cora & law relationship is the tragic cherry on top. you get a good dose of their adventures here too, and some heartbreakingly deep conversations between them. it is not tagged with major character death, but rosinante's death is referenced, (and made me tear up, dammit), hence why the warnings might look a little confusing. this writer also has another story of a similar premise that focuses on rosinante!!
Bridges and train tracks hem in a town ~ by Harmonica_Smile (Rescue_Remedy) / @chromatic-lamina

my thoughts: this is one of the most cathartic stories i've read. perfect balance between "too perfect" and "not satisfying", law gets only a few minutes to chat with the ghosts of his past, and the conversations he holds with these characters are just, perfect. honestly this story helps me sleep at night. i can't explain it. characterization is solid, pacing is great. good, good read!!

ive mentioned this b4 but a gangle hc i have for literally no reason is that shes a rlly good judge of character & rlly good at sensing chemistry between ppl, which leads to her having strong shipping opinions xp
i think while she may have wrote a lot of ship fics, they were also usually character studies in disguise. i think she would be a rlly good author & have a great sense of pacing & how different types of relationships can develop depending on whos involved. i imagine she got a lot of praise for how accurately she wrote characters, probably somewhat popular in her fandoms
she definitely wouldnt go out of her way to trash other ships but if asked she would explain her analysis of each character & why certain pairs would or wouldnt work in her eyes. she gets very frustrated abt canon ships that lack proper chemistry lol
shes the first to pick up on how ppl feel abt each other whether its positive or negative, & may gently try to redirect those ppl accordingly, either to avoid conflict or encourage them to get to know each other better. if she can tell 2 ppl have feelings toward each other, shell hint that they should hang out more, and if they outright tell her they have a crush? full on matchmaker, shes doing everything she can to help her friends get a date
she has fun playing cupid but ultimately she wants to see her friends happy, & she knows them dancing around their feelings probably isnt good for them!! thats part of why she tries so hard to get one of them to say smth, if they never even try then how will they know for sure?
none of this has any basis in canon whatsoever this is just my take on gangle being a shipper & writing fanfic

just for clarification, would a ship like smallidarity qualify for this event, despite not being a hermitship, or do we have to have at least one hermit included in the ship? also, is there a limit to how many ships can be in one work? like, if someone wanted to do a relationship study thing for a single character with multiple ships involving that character, would that be allowed? sorry for the long ask btw :]

To answer your first question: yes, Smallidarity qualifies for this event! (We love Smallidarity!) Hermits do not have to be included in the ship(s) you write about. Hermits do not even have to be featured as characters in your work at all, if you don’t want.
We just recently updated our FAQ with a similar question:
Does my fic/ship have to include/focus on members of the Hermitcraft SMP specifically?
Nope! This is essentially a “Hermitshipping and friends” Big Bang. The main relationship in your fic does not have to include a Hermit. Your fic does not have to even include any Hermits as characters.
Your fic may ship Hermits with other Hermits (examples: Keralis/xB, Grian/Mumbo/Scar).
Your fic may ship Hermits with non-Hermits (examples: Martyn/Ren, Etho/Quackity).
Your fic may ship non-Hermits with non-Hermits (examples: Jimmy/Joel, Katherine/Shelby).
As long as the characters you are writing about are from a fandom considered “related” to Hermitcraft, you should be good to go!
To answer your second question: there is no limit to the number of ships that a single work may feature. A relationship study fic sounds absolutely wonderful!!

-Excessive violence (lots of blood, stabbing, shooting. Fight scenes are fine.)

I will write about experiences of ableism for a disabled character, homophobia for a gay character etc but will not write works with the message that these forms of discrimination are acceptable. It should go without saying that they're not.

-Omegaverse stuff. Or anything with dark, damaged "alpha males" with anger issues involved.
Unless you paid an extra £5 for a fic to come out quicker, commissions may take me up to a few weeks, depending on how many I have to write, my uni workload and stuff going on in my personal life. I will keep you posted about it consistently.

Coming Attractions!
Yes, I'm aware it's Tuesday not Monday but shhhhh XD
Just a quick one this month. Not even going to split it up by fandom as I usually do, just kinda blitz through.
So I ended up...essentially taking January off from writing, apart from a scattered few sentences here and there. Which on the one hand was probably good for me but on the other hand I'm behind on projects lol. Ah well.
Priorities for this month:
1. SWBB
I'm picking up the project I had to step away from last year. Anakin was not found at age nine and never became a Jedi; we're handwaving that TPM ended roughly the same way anyway because Padme and Obi-Wan are very good at what they do and one of the other pilots got lucky on the droid control ship.
Fast-forward to like a year and a half/two years into the Clone Wars, Ahsoka ends up briefly stranded on a planet that's neutral mostly because it's a black market hub. They click pretty quickly, hang out for a while, stumble into a Separatist plot to test a chemical weapon and blame a limnic eruption for the deaths, and Deal With It. Hondo and Bo-Katan are briefly involved because I said so XD
2. P&J
We're getting to the part where Ari actually finds stuff out, lol. Getting to Europe and talking with other researchers, etc. There's some interesting stuff in Marseille, and Calais is important. And Ari and Phil continue to be cute in the background.
3. The Other Battlestar
Baltar ends up on Pegasus; there's a bunch of stuff built up around the two OCs who fill the plotholes he left behind...I need to get more text down in general, lol. And also figure out how I want to structure it? Like...I do need to establish the new people (including a few on Pegasus, like the senior medical officer, a marine officer, there will also be a Four who gets pulled from the civilian fleet...) and also clarify why Baltar ends up in a different position (and why Helo doesn't because he and Athena still need to meet). And it would probably make the most sense to just go linearly and handle all the miniseries exposition in order. But then again would that actually be Interesting; or would it be better to pick up later and jump back and forth in time...yeah, you see my problem lol.
4. Acheron
Javert Groundhog Day fic; looping the last 36ish hours of his life. (from right before he heads to the barricade to his death).
5. Maybe get back into Precipice or write some origfic if I have time/brain.
Longer-range projects:
1. Percussive Maintenance is still hanging out in my head, so I'm tentatively planning on that for GBB
(aka the one where the at least two concussions Sam gets during Downloaded unlock Enough of his memories)
2. Or maybe I'll jump back to The Blood of Angry Men, we'll see.

3. What I'm definitely not doing is any of the crossovers floating around in my head; either the Star Wars ones or the WoT ones.
(the one I talked about the other night; and a fusion is actually sort of building in my head because of course it is. Mostly because of the Kara-as-Mat thing I pinged onto the other night; but also Baltar would be an interesting Logain; possibly Zarek as Taim? I think I'd leave Rand as Rand and just fill in the roles around him. Lee also lines up really well with Perrin...and since this would derail pretty early on I feel a little more Flexible about love interests/etc. lol. For reasons of Tuon, Moiraine, and Lan, mostly. Also Faile. Also I'd still want Caprica as a sul'dam, I think, but Logain doesn't have a canon love interest IIRC sooooo that's easier to sort out XD ...although now that I think about it, Athena as Nynaeve and Helo as Lan could work...)
4. Incinctus/other Castlevania things.
5. I'm doing pod_together again once signups open. I need to refine my fandoms list, haha. Not that I haven't had interesting times the last couple years, but it'd be nice to get matched based on something that Isn't a very secondary/tertiary fandom for me again.
6. AtLA may come floating back into my head enough to pick up some of the projects I wandered away from there, we'll see.
Not writing, strictly speaking, but there's some admin/modding stuff for this year's GBB that I should get a move on, especially since the event is moving to May-October, plus helping out with SWBB the way I do every year.
...yeah, that's pretty much where things stand. Hopefully I'll hit a nice groove this month!

I pretty much just write for whichever fandom I'm in at that moment - currently it's The Untamed but I've also written for Vampire Chronicles, Les Mis, Star Trek, X-Men and Discworld

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Rarely. I used to all the time, when I didn't get very many comments and I knew most of the fandom (when I was writing for Discworld) and then All In became VERY unexpectedly popular, and keeping on top of responding to comments just became impossible and I fell out of the habit. If someone asks a specific question or challenges something I have written I will respond but that's it.
What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't often write angsty endings, but Soulmate Words and Solemn Promises is a "your soulmates last words to you are written on your skin" AU so. that was pretty much fucking guaranteed to be bleak as all fuck.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I pretty much exclusively write happy endings haha but I think special shoutouts have to go to the ends of All In and Harmony is the Value
Do you get hate on fics?
I have done before - the VC fandom is pretty catastrophically toxic, so I wasn't surprised to get hate on those fics, and I think I got one personal visitation from the infamous Xiyao Troll?
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
No, not really... though I am currently working on a secret project with @eleanorfenyxwrites that has changed that 👀
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I think the only direct crossover I've been involved with are the les trekables fics I wrote with @dotsayers

Not that I'm aware of
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I've had people ask if they can translate my work but I don't think any of the translations ever got posted, that I'm aware of...
What's your all-time favorite ship?
I don't feel like it's fair to say because I love them all equally, my brain just fixates on different ones at different times 😆
What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
I've actually made a rule for myself where I only post stuff once I've finished writing it to specifically avoid this!
What are your writing strengths?
I'm gonna say... dialogue, and exploring character emotions
What are your writing weaknesses?
I really struggle with action scenes, and with describing backdrops or props further than, like, The Vibes. where are the characters? they're in a room, don't worry about it.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I've done little phrases or words in other languages (french for VC, and honorifics for CQL) but I wouldn't be confident going further than that
First fandom you wrote for?
Beyblade, though Teen Titans and the The Edge Chronicles were the first to get actually posted online 🫣
Favorite fic you've written?
tough one! All In will always have a special place in my heart because it reminds me of @spicyshimmy-blog 💜 the While There Are Green Hills, There Will Be Wood To Burn trilogy took about three full years to write and I am HUGELY proud of it, and Where There's A Will, There's A Road is my first fic to get podfic'd so I like to listen to it all the time, which has definitely made it one of my favourites!
