I have this idea for an Edgy Leader named Missingstar (originally Sparkpaw, but got in a dog fight thanks to bad leadership and was named Missingfur) who’s very ambitious but distant from her Clan getting pulled into a river while chasing after a queen’s kits and ends up a couple day’s walk from the Clan with said queen. Her name is Berrybush. They grew up together and Berrybush is taking none of Missingstar’s shit. By the time they get home Missingstar is Very Gay and immediately makes her deputy.

Sestina for Love and Mothers

Mama said, your sharpboned Nonna loved a soldier who flew fighterplane skycircles all the way home. She got him thinking what if – could we plant berrybushes, build slides dyed by sticky kid fingers raspberry red? When Grandpa began to forget if he had shaved, his days she was still Honey. Bedside deathside Honey.

Mama said, my mother felt her party shoes glued honey- stuck when unannounced he rayed through her 16th birthday – who on earth? she asked, and the rest of the years felt like todays. Mama’s father made his living in curtains, always tightholding home. In their one story house all the walls were red. Mama told me days off breakfast, all their socks on hardwood slide.

She told me at thirteen my daddy made his slide, showed me yearbook photos, sunspots dripping remembered honey. Their touch is always red. She never had to say, find someone who plants where grass won’t grow, pronounces garden, home. Herbs and vines grow-cover them calm outside each day.

Mama spoonfed me stories like prescription, take twice daily – How Grandpa built my backyard slide, How Nonna sewed her toughthread home, Her happy whim marriage, sandtoes like grains of honey. Then turned to yet-to-comes, you, who generations label love, will redden

everything you touch. You will red the sky until nothing lasts but break of day. She didn’t reveal the waterpressure on whoever I tried on, that my shoulders would slide low when first love melts to bitter once-honey. That I’d feel failed unable to build foundation of home.

But Mama tucked me in her shawlwing home and gave me a sweater to wear, wool and warm red. Interrupted her stories with sighlips, Oh, honey. Do you think any of us built love in a day? Let me tell you how we slid sometimes, hid sometimes, yes, we, who –
