do you ever think about mandy telling ian that being with caleb was an upgrade from mickey?

i think about the look on his face and the hesitation in speaking to mandy about it. to me it’s like ian was disappointed in knowing mandy would still look down on mickey, especially considering she was there witnessing him taking care of ian and his disorder. i love that ian says i miss mickey despite him telling svetlana he’s ’done with that part of his life’ and hurting mickey in the prison scene.

i feel like that’s the moment ian’s mask slips away and he wants to be honest with mandy for a second, allowing himself to acknowledge that he does miss mickey but he broke up with him because he loves him too much.

this is why he quickly adds the ‘but’ trying to convince himself that what he has now it’s okay, he can move on. adding the bit about him surely breaking up with caleb because of him being bipolar says a lot about them too. cause ian expects caleb to leave him and he’s ‘okay’ with it. what ian knew back then too was that mickey wouldn’t have left ian, ever. he didn’t want mickey to suffer and put him through all that— after being with his mother and having to live with her and her boyfriend in their miserable state. he realised what he would have put mickey through and did what he considered the best thing for him.

he kept himself busy, building his life away from him, getting into relationships and pretending that was what he truly wanted, but then he hears about mickey being back and suddenly everything comes crashing down. all of his intense feelings, what made him feel alive, those are back.

ian not being able to sleep at night cause he kept thinking about mickey shows why he would protect himself by pretending he doesn’t care

when he meets mickey for the first time after jail, he goes straight to him to ‘fight’ and it feels like ian has never been more alive than that time. i don’t see him pretending or trying to fit into what he is not ( which is what i think he did with his other relationships as they kept judging ian for one thing or another )

when he talks to fiona at night he tells her he can’t get him out of his head, he finally admits that he’s always thought of mickey and finally seeing him led to him spiralling and all of his self control going to shit. trying to control himself not to give in, cause he’s done that so well by having mickey away from him, out of reach but he’s there now and he can’t help it.

he literally saw mickey a couple of hours before saying that and they were together for like, 5 minutes? yet that was enough for ian to feel that thrill that he tried so hard to forget and convince himself he could live without.

i love that he runs away with mickey, i love that mickey tells him ian was the only one that had his back and that not even his family did half of the shit ian did for him. how ian admits he didn’t visit because it was hard to see him through the glass, cause fuck how can he keep himself stable if everything he wants and makes him happy is so close but so far away? and then ian admitting he thought of mickey a lot, finally being honest about that.

i completely get ian not going to mexico with mickey back then, that would have been a shit show for both but i also love the fact that ian wanted to be there so that he could see with his own eyes that mickey was finally safe and once again free (in some extent).

him telling lip about running away, asking if he should have gone with mickey. like he knows he wanted to do that, he forced himself to walk away but the moment he thought lip considered them running away together a good idea, he felt hopeful and regretful cause he wanted someone else to confirm he’s not losing control but that it was ok to do, the right thing.

but monica dies right there and i can’t imagine ian being in mexico finding out about it and being so far away, not being able to go back. i feel like mickey would have blamed himself so much for that too.

things go to shit from there on and i know it’s both because of monica dying and mickey leaving. he doesn’t have the time to control himself, to shut his feelings off and put mickey in the back of his mind locked away like before. everything comes crushing down and then trevor isn’t supportive, blames him for things and gets angry at him for the whole gay jesus thing (like hello, he’s having a bipolar episode? )

i’m sure ian just couldn’t stop himself comparing the way mickey treated him, loved him and cared for him during his ups and downs— to how trevor dealt with it all. he keeps going down cause nothing makes sense anymore.

then he goes to prison, everything still sucks and it worse because he’s still recovering, still vulnerable and has to spend years in a place that’s not safe, not familiar to him. but he sees him, he sees mickey and it’s like he can breathe for the first time. he’s finally safe and he’s loved

I think one of the main parts of why I don't like season 11 is cause of the way Ian acts after Terry died (honestly how they handled it as a whole). Why did they give us ZERO sweet scenes with them ??

I defend Ian a lot about how he acts after 3s ep6 and I feel like this is kinda a similar situation? Not completely the same. Mickey is clearly upset and vulnerable and Ian laughs. Ian goes through so much emotional growth in between s3 and 11 and they still make him act like that?? His husband is literally crying and he just looks at him like a fucking freak. mickey even being able to cry is already such a big thing but infront of Ian is a whole different step forward. The writers love taking serious situations with gallavich and turning them into bad attempts at humour. LET THEM LOVE EACHOTHER

And ur telling me we don't see mickey interact with any of his siblings about Terry dying. I wanted a Monica type celebration. I want to see them playing drinking games about all the bad shit Terry's done to them. Give me an old welcome banner where the word home has been crossed out and replaced with hell. The fact they don't even mention mandy is a FUCKING CRIME.

Tonight I'm thinking about Mickey's character development and growth and how he even got to that point.

Do you think tiny Mickey even thought getting married was an option for him? When he realized he liked boys the way he was supposed to like girls? Do you think he thought he'd be alone?

And then he's forced to marry Svetlana and he says it's just a piece of paper. I go back and forth all the time about if he really thought that or if it was a defense mechanism or a rationalization or whatever you want to call it. Because he's in love with a boy and he's marrying a woman and as far as he knows then, that's how things are always going to be.

And then he comes out for that boy and tells him he loves him. And he says, "Thick and thin, good times, bad, sickness, health, all that shit," and of course he remembers those vows from his wedding but maybe those words could actually mean something with someone like Ian.

And when Ian mocks him for it? When he says, "You gonna marry me? We gonna go down to the courthouse in some tuxes like a couple old queens?" What do you think that feels like, to have someone you’ve risked literally everything for throw that back at you?

Note: I am not mad at Ian for this because he was going through it to say the least so please do not think I'm attacking him for this.

Then of course there’s the whole season 10 arc with the courthouse and Byron and my thoughts on that are probably a separate issue but I will say this: he probably thinks it’s really happening. He’s been in love with Ian Gallagher for going on 10 years and they’re at the courthouse and they’re getting legally married, then that falls through, and Mickey says, “You’re just saying you don’t love me enough now.” (And again, Ian’s got his own stuff and I’m not mad at him for this either.) But he’s given his all for this man and Ian won’t even call it an engagement ring or wear it on his finger.

Someone else made a post recently about Mickey’s insecurity in their relationship (if you find it before me please remind me who it was!!! EDIT: it was @zutaralesbian) and they’re right! Obviously the man has hope and love but WOW do you think he ever felt like Ian didn’t love him as much? In the season 6 prison visit or with the parole hearing or outside Byron’s little loft?

SO I want Mickey to think about the guest list and the soloist and the stargazer lilies and those gold Chiavari chairs with the white cushions because like he said, this is his fucking wedding day and he gets to have that with the man he loves.

to people who don’t think ian fell ‘as hard’ as mickey did, you are BLIND.

it takes ian TEN SECONDS every time to fold for mickey like EVERY TIME.

take the first time they fucked, ian was into someone else (even if he was an evil pedo) and all it took was eye contact and BAM.

take mickey coming out of juvie, ian immediately waiting for him.

take the second time in juvie - ‘you got any fuck left in you?’ ALL IT TOOK

take the season 4 stuff, post army, and mickey just had to be there. Ian folded in two seconds (so did mickey, but we know he’s a smitten kitten) with his only stipulation at the time being ‘suck my dick’. and BAM.

take season 7, mickey in that long, unwashed hair, straight from prison, escaped convict. he kissed back IMMEDIATELY, then had a little tiff, and then just could not resist.

take season 9, the moment mickey lies down, ian is ON HIM.

take season 10, the moment mickey climbs through the window it’s ‘c’mere’. the moment he says yes to the proposal, it’s making out in front of a room of people and two likely unconscious guys ian just beat up to defend mickey.

take season 11, when all they did was kiss and fuck. ian lit said he wouldn’t have sex until mickey got a job, did it work? no!

they fell just as hard as each other, at the same time. no one fell first, no one fell harder, they just express stuff differently. just because ian doesn’t do HUGE romantic gestures like getting thrown in prison, he still does big gestures and still loves mickey more than anything.

You can spend a lot of time trying to justify everything a character has done, and it’s great to look at the reasoning behind their actions that people might not understand.

But you can also sometimes say yea it’s understandable why they did it but it was still a shitty thing to do, and that’s okay. Humans make mistakes, your favourite characters will too. It’s ok. It doesn’t make them bad people.
