melancocky & such...
i've been thinking a lot about the recent season of random acts of flyness and unsurprisingly spent more time thinking about how the episodes articulate sentient wounds; wounds sacral, psychological, physical and ancestral. it’s a little daunting there’s all these to attend to in the course of also surviving and being present. in episode 2, it names a wound persona born of the character najja, and describes sentient wounds as:
Tumblr media
“ the story of the pain that lives in your body, and feeds on the stories you tell it. the pain being often lies dormant, until triggered by a story it can feed on. it’s goal ? to survive and convince you that they- the pain-are you.”
& in my experience, the pain, wound or lack once sentient is indeed you. it isn’t all of you, but it is you. here’s how i see it: a personal pain from just living is surviving many serious things i shouldn’t have survived alone. blessed with a sacred gift of deep knowing, or by sheer determination, i’d been working the maths to try solve the big gnawing knotty things in my body. i realized this is something that i couldn’t do alone, but despite my best attempts, what i need for that wound to seal or even be poured into seems to be delayed and denied for so many reasons that i, as whatever i is, can say okay well at least i tried, but the wounds do not care. a curse of being born from where i came is at once been so gifted as seeing things as they really are, but this way of seeing is very costly. deep knowing makes living incredibly difficult for me.
it’s an uneven double edged sword that makes me wish i could be more blissfully unaware. i don’t even know if it is me particularly or that the wounds seem to take up some of my nature automatically in being impatient and incredibly high mantainance, this high maintenance being it better be so fucking good, whatever salve, or i don’t want it. it feels like an exaggeration saying high maintenance when all it really wants is a lot of time spent with others and a lot of physical intimacy that feels impossible(or lackluster) under capitalism. but again, the wounds don’t know this. so i’m spending the extra energy i don’t have trying to acknowledge the wound in a way or find the language to let it know that i see it and pacify it still all on my own. in my case this lack of community or space to be able to show them continue to impact the severity of the wound and by implication me. in my experience, my wounds are not dormant things that need stories to be triggered, i’m actively seeing it manifest itself daily even on somewhere as vapid as instagram 💀 which is why i’m grateful for the articulation of sentient wounds because the wounds r bloody alive.
i don’t know the extent of control we have with our wounds, but i find it very important roaf2 has named it sentient because i’m seeing how it changes me. najja as one of her sentient wounds, celine, in the couple’s therapy scene talks about how celine protects najja, as well as other qualities that makes it impossible for najja to hate celine. i don’t hate my wounds, infact i tend to take a nurturing role with it and let it misbehave and get nasty and not feel a hey don’t do that role with it. i enjoy some of the changes this wound is bringing, i sure do need to get cockier, i sure do need to remember how loud it demands, how it recoils at lowly offerings, how it spits on plastic, i sure need to be more proud of myself 4 surviving the things—it says i am a formidable bitch because it is.
& as for the less desirable changes like xxxxx, xxxxxxxxxxxx, xxxxxxxxxxx, we’ll see about that in the letting go portion of the healing rituals. for now i let it rage. 🌺

I just started Random Acts of Flyness and it’s amazing. I’m surprised I never heard of it before. The Ripa the Reaper sketch is equal parts uncanny and horrifying. The little rhyme of everybody dies one day is striking. It is a tremendous show.

Terence Nance created the late-night sketch comedy television series Random Acts of Flyness Season 2, which had its HBO debut on August 4, 2018. Each episode of the show will “feature interconnected vignettes that make the series a unique mix of vérité documentary, musical acts, magical realist melodrama, and humorous animation,” according to the description of it as a “fluid, mind-melting stream-of-conscious response to the contemporary American mediascape.”

We all work at a place, you know what I mean? Where there are, to your point, protocols for the distribution of media, whether it’s The Hollywood Reporter or HBO in my case, and those protocols are in the value system. Those protocols are not in service of the thing I’m in service of. I’m trying to make something that honors my ancestors and really shifts consciousness toward us reinitiating ourselves through ritual and inter-ritual and even progressing that … and that is not in the set of interests of the protocol [in terms of what] needs to be released. I just think that in a very existential way, resistance takes all kinds of forms. And that’s one external form it takes.
I think, particularly with the TV resistance, the fact that I work at a place that has protocols that I could find a way into, the lesson there is just to know that my ability to get Random Acts of Flyness: The Parable of the Pirate and the King on HBO, is a result of the rituals that I do. It’s not because of some strategy I have or a certain amount of power in the earth realm. It’s an ethereal and spiritual challenge that is being strategized upon and acted upon in a spiritual and ethereal place. It’s protected there, and that’s why it’s happening. And to have a level of faith to always turn to that methodology, when I face resistance, is a discipline.

Terence Etc. - V O R T E X - hip hip, r&b, jazz, and whatever else works for each song, i.e. a perfect match for the Brainfeeder label
First introduced into the public eye as a filmmaker with his 2012 Sundance Film Festival debut “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty”, Terence Nance (also known as Terence Etc. in more musically aligned spheres) exists on the threshold of artistic form. Terence has built a reputation over the last decade as one of America’s most adventurous filmmakers and is perhaps best known for his Peabody Award-winning HBO series “Random Acts of Flyness”, a television program that he created, directed, starred in, edited, and scored in 2018. He is truly multidisciplinary. He draws. He writes. He sings. He plays the guitar. He builds things. He harbors in himself a great many possibilities, a great many realities that whirl about seeking expression and balance. It is this desire for balance—balance of life, balance of emotions, balance of energies within— that brought forth “V O R T E X”, his debut album. “V O R T E X is a sonic tool that I made so that I can play it for myself and balance my energy between masculine and feminine; destructive and creative; domination and submission; right and left; sun and moon; day and night: opposing energies generally,” explains Terence. “The album intends to use sound, melody, song, incantation, etc. to rebalance a bodyspirit through out the constant circular movement of life.” The album was written and produced by Terence, along with long time friends and collaborators: Solomon Dorsey, Nick Hakim and his brother Nelson Bandela. Most of the songs on the 11 track album are arranged as diptychs that swell and fold in on themselves in a dizzying oscillation. Terence is flirtatious in his lamenting, with a style that swells from suggestively oracular, to vaudeville, to your local battle of the bands. The record certainly defies easy categorisation but is forged with the same spirit of experimentation and adventure synonymous with Terence’s heroes and contemporaries, artists like Andre 3K, Solange, Serpentwithfeet, Nelson Bandela, Standing on the Corner, Earl Sweatshirt, Nick Hakim, and Moses Sumney and indeed, Brainfeeder’s illustrious founder Flying Lotus. V O R T E X also draws on the literature of Louise Erdrich and Toni Morrison, as well as the drawings of Ruby Amanze whose voice is featured on the album.

Random Acts of Flyness by Terrence Nance
afrosurrealist, avant-garde television program created/conceptualized by Terence Nance. for the purpose of this project, i will be focusing on the season 2 program: The Parable of the Pirate and the King.
key themes:
affirming blackness, decentering whiteness
black subconscious
coping with antiblackness thru interpersonal relationships
spiritual rebirth
rituals
blackness as a concept beyond bodily experiences
african diasporic takes on liminal space & bridge crossing
(black) human experiences beyond 3rd dimension
ancestral veneration
i am most interested in using this program to discuss the "work" we're all meant to be doing for liberation, but also work that is essential to building worlds that black queer maGes have the possibility of thriving in. also interested in this to explore black queer maGes relationship to work that is assigned vs work self-assigned/ancestrally gifted.
*will provide possible rituals and "work" for people to explore for themselves. will work on link. may just create dropbox?*
