Iwaizumi nods dumbly, stumbling back as Oikawa pushes past him into the apartment they used to share. A lump forms in his throat. No one’s called him Iwa-chan in weeks. No one’s called Hanamaki and Matsukawa Makki and Mattsun in weeks, but the endearments trip off Oikawa’s tongue like honey.

“‘Zumi? Who is it?” Matsukawa asks, emerging from their bedroom, hair mussed and eyes hooded. Hanamaki is a step behind him, arms loped around Matsukawa’s broad shoulders. Any other time Iwaizumi would take a moment to appreciate the view, but right now, the only thing on his mind is -

“Oikawa?” Matsukawa’s eyes sharpen when they land on the newcomer. “What the fuck?”

Oikawa smiles, a little sad. “Hey,” he says. “I’m home.”

One heart-stopping pause, and then Hanamaki is the first to react. He straightens, any trace of softness gone, and pushes Matsukawa behind him protectively. “Hajime, get away from him,” he hisses. “He could be dangerous.”

Oikawa steps forward, hands held up in a placating gesture. “Makki, it’s me.”

“You’re not him,” Hanamaki says. “You can’t be.”

Matsukawa glances between Iwaizumi and Oikawa, uncertain. “They told us you were killed,” he says.

Oikawa faces Iwaizumi, frozen in place by the door. “Iwa-chan,” he says. His voice trembles. “You believe me, right?”

“I -” Iwaizumi hesitates. The man looks like Oikawa, but as he approaches, it becomes clear that a few of the details are… wrong. His eyes, once pure brown, are tinged with red around the pupils. His skin is… is it paler? And his fingernails have grown sharp, almost claw-like.

Oikawa notices his wariness and deflates. “I wouldn’t hurt you,” he says. He licks his chapped lips, and Iwaizumi swallows hard when he thinks he sees a hint of fang.

“You have to believe me,” Oikawa says to all three of them. “I - I didn’t know if you would want me to come back like this, but there was nowhere else for me to go, and… and I missed you.”

He sounds almost on the verge of tears, and Iwaizumi itches to take him into his arms despite his fear. He locks eyes with Matsukawa.

“I believe him,” Iwaizumi admits. Oikawa’s shoulders slump with the weight of his relief.

Matsukawa nods slowly. “I do, too,” he says. “I’m worried it might be wishful thinking, but…” He shrugs, huffing a humorless laugh.

Hanamaki stays on guard, but he lets Matsukawa lead him closer. Oikawa’s expression brightens with every step they take to him. He clenches his hands into fists as if to prevent himself from reaching out. “Mattsun,” he chokes. “Can I -”

“C’mere,” Matsukawa says. He opens his arms, and Oikawa falls into them with a muffled sob, burying his face in his shoulder. Hanamaki pats his back hesitantly, guiding them to the couch.

Iwaizumi watches. He aches to join them, but that can wait for later. For now, Oikawa looks like he could use a towel and a hot bath.

He grabs a towel from their master bathroom and fills the tub, testing the water to make sure it’s not too hot. Iwaizumi doesn’t even know if temperature affects Oikawa anymore, but it can’t hurt to be cautious.

When he returns to the living room, Oikawa is tucked in between Hanamaki and Matsukawa. He’s taken off his shoes, his lanky legs are curled to his chest, and he’s dripping water all over the couch. None of them mind.

“Here,” Iwaizumi says, bending down in front of him to pat his hair dry.

“Thanks,” Oikawa mumbles, leaning into Iwaizumi’s touch. Iwaizumi smiles at him, grabbing a nearby ottoman and pulling it over. Once he’s seated, he takes Oikawa’s hands and clasps them tight in his own. The sharp nails dig into his skin but not enough to draw blood.

Matsukawa has Oikawa cradled flush against his chest. There’s hair in his face, but it doesn’t seem to bother him. Hanamaki’s thighs are pressed against Oikawa’s, and he leans forward to kiss his forehead. It’s like all of them are jostling to soak up his presence, to touch the miraculous body that has returned to them.

Hanamaki clears his throat. “What happened?” he asks. “They said a wild animal got to you.”

“Not an animal,” Oikawa says. “I thought it was a hiker who got lost or something, so being the kind person I am, I got out of the car to help.” He flashes them a weak smile, and they all chuckle.

“But it - it was…” Oikawa grips onto Iwaizumi’s fingers until it’s almost painful. “It hurt like a bitch,” is all he says.

Iwaizumi grits his teeth. Some primal part of him revolts at the very idea of Oikawa being hurt; he wants nothing more than to hunt down whoever did this to him. He meets Hanamaki’s venomous glare and knows he feels the same.

Oikawa notices and laughs. “My knights in shining armor,” he says. Never mind that he’s a hundred times stronger than any of them now. He clears his throat. “I didn’t wake up for a few days, and when I did, I… I was so fucked up. I didn’t want to make that your problem.”

Iwaizumi lets out a strangled sound. “You selfish asshole,” he says. “Thinking you were dead was our fucking problem. Anything is better than that.”

“We’ve always got you, Tooru,” Matsukawa says, running his fingers through Oikawa’s tangled locks.

Oikawa melts into him with a happy sigh. Hanamaki is unusually silent, frowning down at his lap. Iwaizumi nudges him with his knee. “‘Hiro?”

“It’s just - we should have been there. We all knew how much you hated driving at night,” he tells Oikawa. A wan smile flickers over his lips. “You big baby.”

Oikawa pouts. “Yeah, and I was right. This wouldn’t have happened if it had been daytime.” Hanamaki huffs, and Oikawa continues, “Come on, Makki. You would have to be really dense to blame yourself. None of you could have known.”

“Tooru’s right,” Matsukawa says, smiling at Hanamaki over Oikawa’s shoulder. “There’s no point feeling guilty. We have other things to worry about.”

Like what they’re going to tell Oikawa’s parents. Like how three college students are going to hide a fully grown vampire in the middle of Tokyo. Like whether there are others like Oikawa out there.

Iwaizumi is already overwhelmed, but the important thing is that Oikawa is here. He’s home, and though his skin is colder, he slots back in their lives so easily, all soft kisses and warm looks and that sharp, teasing tongue.

“The bath’s getting cold,” Matsukawa reminds them, and Oikawa plasters himself to Hanamaki and demands to be carried to the bathroom, and Iwaizumi knows they’ll make it out all right.

Team cuddles are Oikawa’s favourites and it helps him to connect to everyone physically before going onto the match where he will have to set to people

Is also content with sticking to someone’s side, especially when it is Iwaizumi as he rarely offers affection

Generally just needs affection otherwise ends up whining and sulking mid match

One time when Iwaizumi was mad and got the whole team to ignore him, Oikawa ended up playing badly before pulling out his top moves at the end- // They won but Oikawa also won a lecture

Iwaizumi ends up managing Oikawa’s duties of checking everyone’s there, speaking with managers and coach

MatsuHana stealing Oikawa from Iwa’s side to cuddle with him- Oikawa protests, but in the end does not mind and instead is very smug about it

Cuddles + Kisses with the two gets Iwa annoyed and results in him playing harder so they can finish the match and go home to make a cuddle pile with all four of them

Post-Match Headcanons

Where the four can be found celebrating or being upset together

IwaOi becomes more of a thing when Oikawa is especially upset after a loss and ends up blaming himself

‘I-Iwa-chan, I could have done better, I-’

Iwaizumi reassures him with hugs and the two often hide in the assigned room that their team is given

MatsuHana join after a while and they all cuddle together before heading home to someone’s house

The four can also be found out eating post-match, sometimes with the team, sometimes just the four of them

Oikawa tends to start watching the recorded version of the lost match obsessively and needs to get dragged away for cuddles

Hanamaki throws out jokes to try lighten the situation when losing and is often the one to suggest good places to eat to gain back their energy

Matsukawa is often silent, but knows when to speak up to cheer up/comfort/encourage the conversation to keep going

Iwaizumi mothers all of them and makes sure that they are all eating well, gaining back their energy and prepared for the next match (aka not sulking at loss or being too arrogant over their win)

Somehow always ends up crashing at someone’s place and when they do, it is a squeeze to fit in the bed, but they do-

Cuddles + Reassurance + Kisses + All the affection + Chatting = All four of them being happy and content in the end when they fall asleep
