The task I wanted to do:

What I needed to do in order to do task 1:

- task 1.1: Draw a hypercube and

- task 1.2: then give each of the 16 vertices a name - which is the 16 different "cells" (I dunno which word to use, sorry) of a venn diagram with 4 overlapping sets plus a circle around that 4-venn diagram.

//additional info: For the 3rd dedekind number visualization I already posted I needed to use 20 cubes. Each of the 8 vertices of a cube was related to 3 sets - A, B and C - and the intersections of these sets. (AB, AC, BC, ABC)

So, back to me attempting to do the 4th dedekind-number visualization:

So I started to draw that venn diagram using ellipses, but I slightly altered it, because I wanted to use my isometric grid paper. (The angles of my drawing are different than in the picture depicted above.)

I started to draw the 4 ellipses, and I somehow started to see two intertwined/interlocked tubes due to the additional helplines I used for drawing.

Then I started to use my thicker black pen to make this effect of these two interlocked tubes more visible:

Now I plan to write the sets/letters at the backside of that piece of paper - in mirrored, so I can hold this piece of paper (with the tube drawing in front) against the light - and see the letters of the set names shining through.

i might also add some details to the tubes.

A scenario in my Jazz DR

So… made a new dr and I need help naming it (Jazz DR is a placeholder unless we like that)

Me and Spence meeting for the first time!!!

The music filled the space, the small underground bar. Technically it’s a speakeasy, but that sounds pretentious. My fingers dance along the piano keys while Jenna sings and Pierre plays his trumpet. We play a few songs before taking a break. I go over to the bar to have a drink since playing in front of people makes me nervous.

The bartender and I talk for a while until some tall, nervous looking man sits next to me. He sits quietly for a while. I try to discreetly get a good look at him.

He’s tall, just about the same height as me. Maybe taller. He has brown hair, it’s slightly slicked back. He’s wearing a green shirt under a brown cardigan. He’s so cutely nerdy.

Then he starts talking.

“Hey… I’m Spencer, I’ve been listening to you play for the past couple of weeks and… you’re amazing.” He manages to stutter out. It takes everything in me not to blush.

“Oh! Thank you. I’m Mathis.” I say, holding my hand out for him to shake. He hesitates.

“Did you know that the amount of pathogens spread by handshaking is staggering, it’s actually safer to kiss.” He rambles quickly. I put my hand down.

“Really?” I say, a smile playing on my lips.

“Yeah! 80 percent of all bacteria are actually spread by hands.” He says, smiling. A piece of hair falls in his face and he uses all of his fingers to put it back in place.

“That’s… interesting. I didn’t know that.” I say. “So you’re not big on physical touch?”

“Not really. Not unless I know you well, you know?” He says. His smile is so beautiful. He’s so beautiful. I need to get to know him.

“That makes sense.” I say. I prop my head up on my fist, my chin resting on it. “So, what do you do for a living?”

“I’m a profiler for the FBI.” He says. “We make pr—“

“I know what a profiler is.” I say with a smile. “Isn’t that kind of scary, though? I mean, what if the killer comes after you?”

“That’s happened to some of my colleagues. Never me, though.” He says.

“Well, that’s good.” I say. Both of us go a little quiet for a couple minutes. It’s awkward.

“So…” He stutters. “How long have you been playing piano?”

“Um…” I count the years in my head but give up halfway through. “Since I was six.”

“Six? Really?” He sounds shocked. “That’s… wow… you’re very proficient in it, you know that?”

“You think?” I ask, the compliment makes me blush. I cover my face for a moment until the red dies down.

“Oh, yeah.” He says softly. “I’m not good at any artsy things like that.”

“No? That’s… that’s kind of sad. I love art. All forms of it.” I say. “Maybe you’d be good at photography?”

“Is that considered art?” He says. “I mean, I know technically it is but.. you’d consider it?”

“Of course I would. It’s creative, isn’t it?” I ask. “It’s uh… je ne sais quoi… um… sorry, I can’t think of it.”

“Can’t think of what?” He asks.

“Well, I can’t tell you if I can’t think of it, Spencer!” I giggle. Almost on cue Jenna comes by again. She sets her hand on my shoulder.

“Coming to play again?” She asks, smiling down at me. Her hand finds the back of my head, her acrylics scratching my scalp.

“Of course, just a minute, okay?” I ask, looking up at her. “I’m a bit busy, I’ll be two seconds.”

“Alright.” She says, walking away. All of us in the band are graceful. Especially in this bar. I turn to Spencer.

“Sorry, I have to go…” I say with a soft smile. I get up.

“Alright, bye.” He says as I walk over to the stage and I sit at the piano. Jenna leans over me to ask something quietly.

“Who’s that guy?” She whispers.

“No clue. He’s cute, right?” I giggle.

“To you.” She says, putting her hand on my back gently. Then she tells me the song we’re playing and I oblige, playing the beginning of the song.

BEING WEIRD ISN'T ENOUGH not sure why i like this pin, but i like it.

this film takes place on the cusp between the 80s and the 90s, but i loved that these kids drove these 60s/70s(?) cars, i think to signify that they were low income and couldn't afford modern cars? but i love the atmosphere in this shot.

not the greatest screencap, but i adored everything janie (lala sloatman) wore. the cat-eye glasses, the oversized pink pearl earrings, the ponytail scarf. even though i related to nora's artsy side, i wanted to be janie.

mark (christian slater) is like two different people. at home, he wears cool retro bowling shirts embroidered with the name "dick" and sasses his parents, but at school he wears bland clothing (like he wants to blend into the background) and acts all shy.

i also just really loved mimi kennedy as mark's mom, marla, using a teacup to ash her cigarette into, i just thought it was so posh!

again, loving janie's dangly statement earrings, and the colour combo with her floral bolero (?) and sweet pink dress. i didn't love nora's (samantha mathis) outfit as much, but i was intrigued by the piece she wears over her dress. it ties at the back of her neck, and i think again on her lower back, so it's like a... halter vest? the turtle necklace is pretty dope, and though you can't see it in this shot, she is also wearing purple and white striped tights.

paige's (cheryl pollak) bedroom is a dream! the floral wallpaper and the white bed are so lovely, but the seafoam green radio really makes the colour scheme pop.

man i wish i had a teacher this cool! ellen greene as jan emerson (do they call her miss emerson in the movie? i can't remember), wears the coolest outfits, and she is introduced in this amazing mustard suit accessorized with a turquoise bolo tie! the look is amazing, but it also alerts us that this film takes place in arizona.

paige, doing her WASP thing in an oversized sweater over a blouse, with a string of pearls. it's the necklace that does it for me.

i mostly just wanted to see how many celebrities i could identify in this shot: keanu reeves, johnny depp, george michael, kirk cameron, corey haim, richard grieco... (stole this image from imdb as it was much clearer than my screenshot)

i forgot that plaid wallpaper was a thing and i think it's due for a comeback. particularly loving the plaid (shirt) on plaid (wallpaper) in this scene, so cozy, like a cabin!

so many things to love in this scene: number one, the heart curtains; number two, the kitten sweatshirt (the kittens look like they might be puffy and i can feel it in my mind); number three the "homework causes brain damage" sign on the wall--classic! number four, the clear lamp filled with gumballs? and the cow hanging from it! number five and six, the blue radio and the clear phone! i want one!

did you notice that the tissue box in the highschool staff room is the same as the tissue box in the depressed student's room? do you think it was the same box?

nora's room reminded me of my own room in highschool-- walls plastered with images, and plenty of candles. i think nora might have been one of the prototypes for the manic pixie dreamgirl.

Believe It Or Not I Care

mazz's (billy morrisette) denim and leather look is good.

an example of one of mark's drab shirts, but also nora's completely adorable velvet blouse with a peter pan collar! also, i'm learning that the next time i wear a collared shirt, i need to add a long statement necklace.

so this scene is near the end of the film, and i loved mark's shirt here. i also realized that it's more of a cooler, bolder look than he has previously worn to school, so i think it's supposed to symbolize mark coming out of his shell and revealing more of his true self at school/in public. look at me, i get things.

finally, loving this floral blouse and braided leather suspender on miss emerson. i would probably wear this.

BONUS here's a picture of drew barrymore at "an event" for pump up the volume (according to imdb), i'm assuming it's the premiere, just looking cool and badass. i need that jacket.

Semester Long Project Production

My Part of getting a degree in art is learning self management (and depending on your degree, group management) on major projects. These major projects can span semesters or years, and the management of these endeavors will be one of your most marketable skills when searching for any employment (out of the arts or not).

This exploration is what gets very exciting as you gain more experience and get further along in your degree. Unfortunately much of university is focused on individual exploration and projects (not the very best for a medium like animation!- my focus). Knowing what a nightmare (for me) doing an developed animation on my own is, I decided to focus purely on asset production for my major work this semester. This is great because I would love to work in asset production of the animation pipeline.

My plan: Design, Build, Texture 2 animate-able characters, an Environment Space, and props/creatures

Asset Production

Pipeline I went through ->>>

-> Character Turnarounds

I make these turnarounds to ensure the stylized proportions remain consistent when transferring them into the 3rd dimension. It;s difficult translating a flat style to something very much not while still maintaining the original feel.

-> Box Modeling

It is very important for models to have animate-able topology if you want your models to be of any use. There needs to be more information (geometry) around bending points. I also model in this manner because I learned to model on a tablet so I am very used to modeling low-poly (which is great for render times!).

-> UV Unwrapping

I got good at this from doing this project. Yay! UV unwrapping is basically cutting apart your model so you can put flat images onto a 3D object. Think sewing patterns! The process is much the same where you “mark seams” and “cut” and “sew” them together.

This was something I used to dread but I’ve done It so much I’m like “WOW, this is the easiest part of the process!” As long as the program is working well and the model being unwrapped is a character or object (not a weird interior), It only takes like 30 minutes.

God, what a nightmare! I spent like 6 weeks rigging. I rig and do production in Maya, which means that there are not auto-rigging features that I can use. The rigs Maya give you are not complex enough for what I would like to make. I am much better at this skill now, but, God, at what cost?

Pipeline of rigging from scratch ---> Building the Skeleton -> Building a Control Rig -> Constraining the Skeleton to the Control Rig -> Weight Painting (an artsy interface to tell the bones of the rig how much they are allowed to affect each point of data on the model)

-> Texturing

For this I mostly painted the UV patterns I got from the unwrapping stage. It was a nice break from the highly mathy and technical process of rigging.

-> Posing&Lighting

Once I had colors I was able to start lighting everything to make it look pretty, so yay! I discovered very late that Blender’s lighting system management is poopoo garbage. I had to scramble (AKA spend 30 hours) converting things so they will work and render well in Maya.

Posing is definitely easier than lighting, where I just move the “dolls” that I made. I am still in this stage, EEP! I am working my ass off haha

Can you elaborate on your social science and humanities reasoning?

It's just a cynical view on the role of college in society. Dipshit managers dangle promotions on sticks, creating an idiotic demand for degrees. The noble pursuit of xyz is at best orthogonal to this demand.

Mathy careers pay more so the incentive points at people pursuing them whenever they're capable. I havent seen datasets, but anecdotally I would expect most business majors to be failed engineering majors, in particular, to have failed the math. Also anecdotally I expect many artsy and humanitiesy people to have simply done that selection earlier in life like in high school. In terms of social science just observe that a common topic of conversation is how much of a pointless pain in the ass statistics courses are (psych majors are the worst offenders, here), or in sociology a simple hostility for numeric or data driven work.

Snow White and the 1026 Dwarfs

Kagome weave with dandelion stems - interplay of the fragile and the robust

So, yesterday I plucked some dandelion stems and wanted to tinker something with it. My first attempts with these fresh dandelion stems included different kinds of braids: The material is too fragile to handle such heavy twists. Hence I decided to try the kagome pattern, as the curving/bending/twisting of the kagome pattern is very light and does cause few stress on the material. Additionally, as I wove I realized again the advantage of this pattern: While it is also simple and elegant in its simplicity, it has practical aspects as well, as it gets its stability from the whole it forms. Each stem alone is not responsible for the stability of the woven piece.

But as network of entangled members supporting each other, the kagome weave stands out with its rather robust kind, despite being built up by rather fragile members.

I resized and printed the non-linear regression visualisation/illustration and put it on top of the watercolour background paper.

I included a scrap piece of paper with the title of the picture and have torn it with a spiral-shaped jag at the bottom, which I bent around the top part of the non-linear regression illustration.

Dark and mathy, heady and entrancing is this band from Portugal, Whales, and their new single How Long. It arrives with a music video with a very unique POV, to say the least. How Long’s artsy rock and pulsing electronica is like Foals meets Local Natives, with a hearty injection of both Battles and Depeche Mode. I feel endlessly fortunate to have stumbled upon the band, whom we know very little about since I can’t read the Portuguese that’s on their Facebook profile. We do know that How Long is out on Omnichord Records, and the song, their second single, was preceded by debut Big Pulse Waves, also a ravishing must listen which you can find below. It certainly stays true to that Foals and Battles comparison, but it also evokes early Bloc Party.
