you have good horror opinions, so im wondering what your thoughts are(if you have any/would be willing to share) on the I Spit On Your Grave series. i feel like opinion is pretty starkly divided about it, you know?

It's been a year or so since I've seen the 1978 original I Spit On Your Grave. For those unfamiliar, this is one of the better known examples of the "rape revenge" subgenre. As the name implies, the protagonist, usually a woman, is sexually assaulted, followed by her taking violent revenge on the men who attacked her. As anyone also might guess, most of these movies tend to encourage a more prurient interest over a feminist one, and it's generally not a subgenre with a lot of real winners in it, so to speak. Some examples from the subgenre which are genuinely good movies with actual depth and thought are Revenge (2017) and Ms. 45 (1981).

My feelings about the original I Spit On Your Grave are that it's kind of average. It's not particularly distinguished by any standards you could apply, be it as a horror film, a 70s movie, an exploitation film, etc. The scenes of sexual violence feel pretty tame by comparison to almost any modern movie, and the revenge I recall being satisfactorily enacted. In many ways, purely through the chance of it being made cheaply and decades in the past, it's distinctively better quality than many more modern movies which use the same approach today. The lack of expensive and glossy camera work and lack of expensive and glossy actors put an air of unaffected realism across the movie that works in its favor, but which does not feel particularly intentional. It's fine to watch as a historic artifact, but it's not something I go out of my way to extol the virtues of, unlike say The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Basically I wouldn't argue either side, because I'm not sure I Spit On Your Grave has a level of quality outside the middle of the bell curve,

I will say that 2010 remake of it is just awful. I have no idea how the assault scenes are because everything about it was so stultifying that I gave up. I have no idea what they were trying to do, and I couldn't be bothered to finish. I haven't investigated the series beyond that because the OG doesn't make me feel like I need to see any more, and the remake which somehow has three sequels didn't manage to keep my interest enough to finish. If the 78 version is just average, the 2010 version is purely generic, the negative version of average, the CW network casting call of horror, the khaki pants of revenge films, a footnote on the index of the three paragraph entry you write for the original. I wouldn't argue either side for it, but mostly because I don't think there's enough material to argue about.

Nadie esperaba un remake de la película de culto ‘I Spit On Your Grave’ ya que aunque la película original de 1978 de Meir Zarchi es ampliamente considerada como una de las más crueles películas de terror estadounidenses de los setenta

Sacudiendo al mundo cinematográfico como una de las películas más crudas e intensas de "rape and revenge" jamás realizadas, la primera versión de "I Spit on Your Grave"(titulada en España Escupiré sobre tu tumba) se convirtió en una obra de culto durante las décadas de 1980 y 1990. Originalmente estrenada en 1978 bajo el título "Day of the Woman" y luego reeditada en 1980 con su nombre más reconocible, la película causó conmoción y repulsión entre los críticos debido a su enfoque casi documental.

Presentaba escenas de violencia sexual en planos medios y amplios, sin música de fondo y sin cortes que suavizaran la brutalidad. Esta obra también catapultó inadvertidamente a Camille Keaton hacia el estatus de icono del terror, gracias a su sobresaliente interpretación como la desafortunada Jennifer Hills.

En la primera cinta se narra la historia de Jennifer Hills, una joven urbana que alquila una cabaña aislada en las montañas para trabajar en su última novela. En una tarde aterradora, un grupo de hombres locales ataca la cabaña y viola a Jennifer, dejándola casi muerta. Sin embargo, Jennifer sobrevive y, consumida por el deseo de venganza, les devuelve sus actos atroces de una manera que nunca podrían haber imaginado.

Monroe realiza algunos cambios esta vez respecto a la obra original siendo los más importantes los relacionados con varios de los personajes con un papel clave en el film como la inclusión del Sheriff. Además, el empleo de la cámara de video en la película otorga a gran parte de las escenas un tono voyeur peculiar que, ya sea de manera deliberada o no, sugiere una atmósfera de cine para adultos, contribuyendo de alguna manera a hacer que una película ya depravada sea aún más sórdida.

Los actores masculinos en la película cumplen su papel. Al jugar con los estereotipos de los rednecks locales logran representar de manera efectiva a individuos desagradables. La mejora más notable respecto a la película original se encuentra en la representación más realista de la venganza de Jennifer a lo largo de esta trilogía.

Aunque utiliza algunas tácticas similares a las de Camille Keaton en 1978, lo hace de manera más verosímil y eficaz. Su enfoque no es romantizar la venganza, sino castigar a aquellos que la hicieron daño, de la manera más rápida y contundente posible. No busca satisfacer sexualmente a ninguno de sus agresores antes de hacerlos pagar, lo cual era un aspecto problemático de la versión original y que transmitía un mensaje contradictorio. El film se sirve de unos escenarios rurales para lograr tanto una estética y atmósfera crudas.

En el caso de la segunda parte , Escupiré sobre tu tumba 2 , realizada tres años más tarde, se recurre a otra protagonista. Aquí se cuenta la historia de Katie, una joven aspirante a modelo de Nueva York que cae en una trampa mortal después de responder a una oferta de sesión de fotos gratuita.

Engañada y abusada por Ivan y sus hermanos, Katie se encuentra atrapada en una pesadilla de violencia y humillación que la lleva desde Nueva York hasta Bulgaria. Tras un golpe de suerte, Katie escapa y comienza a planear su brutal venganza, pero ahora debe reunir la fuerza necesaria para ejecutarla implacablemente.

En esta segunda entrega de la serie, la apuesta se eleva significativamente al someter a la protagonista a situaciones aún más desafiantes y perturbadoras que las enfrentadas por Jennifer en la entrega anterior, manteniendo así la intensidad y el interés de la serie.

A diferencia de la película de 2010, que al menos intentó explorar las mentes de los rednecks atacantes de la protagonista, aquí el film recurre al habitual estereotipo de europeos del este como villanos ávidos de maltratar a occidentales desafortunados

En el caso de la tercera y última entrega de la trilogía, los productores intentaron algo novedoso con "Escupiré sobre tu tumba 3". En lugar de contar la misma historia por cuarta vez (contando el original de 1978), escribieron un guion más original.

Aquí volvemos a encontrarnos a la protagonista de la primera parte, Jennifer Hills que sigue atormentada por la brutal agresión sexual que sufrió hace años. Cambió su nombre a Ángela, tratando de lidiar con las consecuencias de su experiencia y ahora tiene un trabajo miserable en una oficina. Después de mudarse a una nueva ciudad, se une a un grupo de terapia donde comienza a reconstruir su vida.

Sin embargo, su vida da un giro cuando su amiga es brutalmente asesinada, llevando a la protagonista a una sed de venganza decidida a hacer justicia por su amiga y las otras víctimas.

En este film, Jennifer Hills es un Ángel de la Muerte, no es una heroína ni una anti heroína. Sus impulsos están arraigados en la oscuridad inherente a la humanidad. En esta nueva entrega, su objetivo son los individuos más despreciables de la sociedad, desde los abusadores recurrentes hasta los criminales sin escrúpulos que evaden la justicia.

Durante el transcurso de las tres películas, vemos cómo la protagonista somete sistemáticamente y elimina a sus agresores. Surge la pregunta de si esta violencia que desata la protagonista está justificada o si Jennifer también es culpable. Por otro lado te plantearás si la trilogía es misógina o feminista.

En resumen, la trilogía "Escupiré sobre tu tumba" presenta momentos brutales y espeluznantes que sin duda captarán la atención de los seguidores del género torture-porn. Por otro lado, todos los efectos son prácticos, lo que añade una sensación de realismo. Los aficionados al gore encontrarán en esta trilogía su paraíso.

Hey thanks for the ask!! (from this post: send me a 🔥 for an unpopular opinion) So sorry I got caught up with some stuff and couldn't answer sooner!!

Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I think it surprises a lot of people who don't typically watch horror when I bring it up. *disclaimer: I love horror, and I love the Saw franchise. This is not me being upset or mean about the franchise. This is just my opinion about it as it compares to other movies in the same genre. Anyone and everyone is welcome to disagree and move along if they don't like what I think🥰💜*

The Saw franchise is tame for a horror series. Yes, it has a lot of gore and bloodshed, but it is nowhere near the goriest or most shocking of horror movies (and no, I'm not talking about snuff films. I mean legitimate horror films, not that crap). The premise of the franchise is definitely terrifying to think about, but after it's been done over and over for (currently) 10 movies, it's not really the idea of being trapped that is getting the audience anymore. At this point, I feel the series relies a lot on shock factor, which is why some of the more recent traps have become so violent, complicated, and inescapable. Yet, even with cranking the violence and the gore, it still doesn't reach the levels of Terrifier, in my opinion. If I had a gore/torture scale, I'd say Saw ranks around the same level as Vile (2011); a bit above I Spit on Your Grave (2010). And that's just fine. I like Saw the way it is, and I don't think it needs to change.
