I'll take on the role of the bad guy
--What is your relationship with Nocchi (Perfume), with whom you sing a duet on "1RKO"?
Nearly 20 years ago, when I had dinner with the three members of Perfume at a sushi restaurant, I asked them, "Does anyone other than Yasutaka Nakata ever write songs?" and "When and how will that be allowed?" If that were to happen, I think it would be a pretty dramatic scene, and I was curious to know what they, the people involved, would think about such a thing.
--I said, "If that happens, I'd like to be allowed to write it."
I'm embarrassed to say that I made that appeal. Since then, I've been waiting for it, wondering if it would happen. But someone who proposes a completely different approach to a team that has achieved great success would definitely be the villain.
--No, no. I'm sure the fans would also like to hear Nocchi's vocals outside of Perfume.
In reality, I would like someone to do it first, and then I would follow suit right away. Because if I do it first, I will inevitably be criticized. But no one will do it no matter how much time passes, so if that's the case, I'll be hesitant to take on the role of the villain, as usual.
──Out of all the members of Perfume, why did you choose Nocchi this time?
Because I had heard that Nocchi listens to my work. I imagined exactly what it was that she liked about it. After considering the sound and scale that would suit her, we decided that this time we wanted her to have a natural yet powerful presence as the vocalist of a small band. We also deliberately wanted it to be something that wasn't danceable. That's why we used a stop-and-go, jerky beat.
What did Nocchi think of recording with her own voice without any effects?
She didn't seem nervous or awkward, and seemed to enjoy herself from start to finish. She performed confidently, and listened to her own takes and was amused. I thought, "Ah, this is what I want to do." For the players, including Nocchi, to go along with the plan I've prepared, and become accomplices. That makes me happy in the first place, but what makes me happiest is when you also agree that it's a good idea in relation to your own work.
