Coprinus comatus has a number of funny names including shaggy ink cap, lawyer’s wig, or shaggy mane. The reasons are quite obvious: The white gills will turn black and discharge a liquid filled with spores. Autodigestion will cause ink caps to turn black and dissolve in a matter of hours after being picked. Young specimen are edible soon after being collected. Placing the mushrooms in a glass of ice water will delay the decomposition for a day or two. The black spore liquid used to be mixed with clover oil and made into ink for quills and ink pens.
