My old edits of Ukraine wearing a more accurate (simplified) traditional costume in comparison to the Sharovarshchyna-like clothes she has on in the original
Sharovarshchyna is basically pseudo-ethnic clothing that has nothing to do with Ukrainian national wear, and only pretends to be ethnic through kitsch elements. Sooo... something like this:
Sharovarshchyna:
Cheap, thin fabric, often glossy. Eye-straining red + white colour combination. Large and very vibrant flowers on the clothes, sometimes glued on. Generally very saturated colours, plastic-looking flower crowns that have no usage in traditional rituals or holidays. Often very low in details, minor accessories like a single necklace. Men often depicted wearing vibrant red boots (symbol of femininity? most of the time brides would wear those). Has nothing to do with Ukrainian heritage. A caricature, theatrical costume popularized in the late 19th century, later endorsed during the soviet era, when russification was especially violent, and only the "correct" showcasing of Ukrainian things wasn't persecuted. Still used by Ukrainians as a scenical costume for the very purpose it was created - because it's cheap, and easier to dance in.
"Sharovarshchyna" comes from the word "sharovary" which is the name of the stereotypical loose Cossack pants
Traditional Ukrainian costume:
Mostly muted colour scheme. Dark red, black and white often used as dominant colours, with details of other tones with higher saturation. Many elements vary depending on the region and occasion. Typically linen or thick cotton fabric. Detailed decorative embroidered elements have spiritual and symbolic meanings. Flower crown-like headwear worn by women during holidays and ceremonies (like marriage). Decorative tassels and fringe are often used on sleeves, hems, and headpieces to add texture and flair.
Also! Aprons, scarves, sashes, belts, and a lot of different headwear! (っ.❛ ᴗ ❛.)っ

Thanks for reading. I plan to do a more elaborate post with illustrations about Ukrainian traditional wear sometime in the future 🙏
Look at what Ukraine gave me! She's so nice to me :))
I just wanna say that it's been 2 whole years since I've isolated myself from the russian media space and I've been feeling fantastic ever since
Ukrainians didn't really have their own internet community prior to russian full-scale invasion. All the content was in russian, everyone copied russians, everyone would aim to be in the russian industry (especially new musicians) because ours wasn't as developed, so instead of creating content and developing it, most would rather work with an already established market.
Now artists have their own community to support eachother, and a lot of awesome content is created for Ukrainians in Ukrainian, a lot of it is original, like the show we have on YouTube called "Tell the history" ("Розкажи історію") where a bunch of comedians and one historian prepare for a collective lecture about Ukrainian history with a lot of improvised humour.
Many things made me realise how assimilated I was in the past and how weak my national identity was, all the times I experienced some of my friends from russia say something chauvinistic to me and how I'd brush it off thinking it was normal despite feeling uncomfortable, how I'd feel like I'm walking on eggshells whenever talking to a stranger from russia and how I'd feel embarrassed about admitting I'm Ukrainian on the internet when I was younger, and how when someone asked in a live chat "are there any russians" I'd answer yes
Fuck vkontaktye fuck those times and fuck russian imperialism

Reality: While Hima intended for her to be average, her characterization took a drastic turn [x]. She’s anything but average.
Ex: She’s a model student within Africa.
Ex: Regardless of her isolated position, she avidly studies foreign relations [x]. Either way, she’d need to given how globalized the world’s economies have become. The 2008 Financial Crisis affected her too, after all.
Ex: She’s described as a go-getter [x].
Ex: She’s not subtle about her economic transactions with European tourists. She’s well adept at making her tourism industry thrive.
“Good –foreign currency– noon!” [x]
Ex: She’s good at sales promotions [x].
Ex: Prices in her country are more expensive in response to high volumes of European tourists.
Ex: As a matriarchal society in which women are the breadwinners of the family – as also cited by Hima in her character notes [x] –Seychelles is not only strong and tenacious but admirably self-effficient.
Misconception: She’s a ‘stupid’ and ‘plain’ airhead.
Reality: She’s a lively, bubbly personality who simply smiles a lot. The term airhead is used to describe her weird personality given that she’s composed of a mix of several cultures. It has nothing to do with her intelligence.
Ex: An unconfirmed African nation refers to Seychelles as an airhead due to French and English influence.
Ex: She loves salted and pickled fish [x] [x].
Ex: She’s notorious for her butt-shaped coconuts [x].
Ex: Her isolation from other African nations parallels that of Iceland and the other Nordics. A unique moment is shared between them where Iceland senses her situation and relates to her fear of being forgotten. I can guarantee you this is where the IceSey pairing came from.
Misconception: She’s related to England and France.
Reality: She inherited much of their culture, along with some Indian and Chinese influence. What ties her and France and England together is that she used to be a colony of theirs at different points in time [x].
Ex: A scrapped design intended for her to have one thick eyebrow and one thin one to represent French and English influence.
Ex: Later, it’s shown that French influence on her country has prevented her from inheriting England’s thick brows [x].
Ex: Her cuisine represents a mix of several cultures.
Bonus facts:
Both the Allies and Axis get stranded on her island during WW2.
She’s a homebody [x].
Her costume as Captain Hook during the 2011 Halloween Event is likely a reference to the fact that young pirates used to have hideouts on her island [x] [x].
She’s tough on litterers.
She was the main character in an unfinished dating simulation titled “Gakuen Hetalia” [x].
In sum, Seychelles is a wonderful character, regardless of how little canon representation she has. She’s a cheerful and vibrant spirit that bravely powers through the obstacles of her isolation, namely economic. Nonetheless, she makes the best out of her unique cultural inheritance and isn’t afraid to show it off. What’s unfortunate is that much of this complexity is watered down in light of disliking her for coming between popular ships.
Hetalia official anime art in the older seasons is like a nightmare I would never wake up no matter how hard I try
What if the new Hetalia season is called 𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂talia: pronoun power, starring the Axis Powers that is now renamed as "Agender beam" and the Allied Powers that is now "Homosquad". America calls himself instead of "the hero", but "the bitch", France then calls himself "The mommy". They live together in Wokearth, with pronoun badges. /ref /s
russians often fire a second missile with a delay in the same spot when targeting civilian infrastructure to kiII as many Ukrainians as possible, including the survivors stuck under the rubble, firefighters, medics, rescuers, journalist, etc.
Literally no English-speaking people know this so I wanna share because I think it's the funniest shit ever
Y'know the quote "russian warship, go fuck yourself" that a Ukrainian guy said on the Snake Island? It became very popular among Ukrainians and was referenced in many other countries.
Ukrainians designed lots of merchandise with it, like stamps and patches, a lot of which was directed at charity early on. Then somebody made this:
The design aims to make the word "go" resemble the Ukrainian trident (coat of arms)
However, at some point people started using it without the russian warship part a lot more often. So I present to you this "patriotic mug", "patriotic pendant", and a "patriotic pillow" all of which say "go fuck yourself"
the full phrase was also very commonly displayed on billboards uncensored... there were a lot more important things to worry about other than keeping street ads appropriate lol
I feel like saying "idi nahui" lost all its offensiveness idk when I hear it I think of the meme 💀💀

EU's escalation prevention policy working so well that russia has started an offensive in Kharkiv oblast and daily targets civilian infrastructure there
Camera footage from the moment of the attack on the hypermarket in Kharkiv. This is a blow to the civilian infrastructure on a Saturday afternoon when many people were quietly buying groceries, discussing plumbing or just working. We already know about 16 dead. Others are still missing. Rescuers need to sift through the ashes and identify people by their relatives' DNA. This is terrorism. This is destruction. This is genocide. Russia must be stopped. Let Ukraine strike back.
